Cosmetic Stitch

Cosmetic Stitch | Specialist Project | Scoop.it

What an interesting concept.... the stitches from surgery , in particular plastic surgery has inspired this artist.  Unfortunately I do not have the stomach for work like this but I really like the illustrative stitches that could so easily be embroidery stitches used in samplers.

Jennifer Rochester | Specialist Project | Scoop.it

This artists has incorporated some her childhood memories into this work but also been inspired by some Victorian sleeves.  I like how these sleeves seem to resemble the pieces of embroidery I inked up and put through the press to gain an impression on paper.  They almost look like an x-ray!

Taiga Ermansons stitches into Kleenex tissues.  Amazing that something like a tissue can withstand that amount of stitching.

Karly Shelton's curator insight, May 31, 2015 1:07 PM

This features different artists from the exhibition "Not What it Seams: Further Thoughts". The goal of this exhibit was for students to find inspiration from the Bankfield Museum's textile collection.

I was particularly draw to the small sculptured pieces created by Bobby Britnell. The pieces are fluid and embroidered yet stand on their own. Another work created by Jeanette Durrant is a soft peice of muslin fabric with threads unraveling with the words "Please resist the temptation to touch" scrawled across it. Handprints also appear in a black charcoal.

This site provides a good list of textile artists to further explore. A good starting point.

Sampler, 1640-1680 (made). Museum Number T.171-1961.

Interesting to see the early samplers are quite often long and thin and contain cut work , needle lace as well as embroidery stitches.

History of samplers: 14th & 15th century - Victoria and Albert Museum | Specialist Project | Scoop.it
A history of embroidery samplers in the 14th and 15th century. Samplers began as a practical tool of the embroiderer and over time became a formulaic or occasionally more individual schoolroom exercise.

I particulalry like how one or two of her pieces do resemble samplers either because of the format of the design or the traditional embroidery done on the item ie of flowers or text.

Rebecca Woodworth's insight:

I think this abstract painting has a look of Boro textiles.  The colour is similar to the indigo blue commonly found in Boro but I really like the bleeding and fading almost as if the blue has been bleached out.

Jennifer McFarlane work so beautiful , lots of encrustation on fabric surfaces using embroidery stitches.  Reminded me of the work of Jennifer Rochester.  Gave me an idea of practising (sampler) stitches and then creating a sleeve with stitches.

Continuing on the 'wear your heart on your sleeve' theme, I thought that these were really interesting in that they contain disfferent types of needle work and embroidery.  The hearts are a little obvious but the idea of embroidering onto cuffs for the sleeve is worth pondering, as is wearing it as a bracelet afterwards!

Elizabeth Parker's Sampler - Victoria and Albert Museum

Elizabeth Parker's Sampler - Victoria and Albert Museum | Specialist Project | Scoop.it
This embroidery, a confession by a young English woman, is unique in the Museum’s collection in its austerity and poignancy.

A very personal sampler containing emotion.  Samplers are usually simply a practice in embroidery, this one is an intimate story of a period in Elizabeth's life.
