The Constant Gardener ~ Heartbreaking Scene

This contemporary scene from The Constant Gardener, shows a montage of present time and past as the main character Justin, discovers that his loved one has left. 

 

The contrast between the dark, rainy present and the bright, sunny past is crutial in showing the emotion and attitude change from Justin. This montage is two sequences that occured in different times, but in the same place.

Batman Begins: Training Scene - The Will to Act

This is arguable as a metric montage, there is a loose continuity to the shots, but they all follow about the same length of time between shots. It places heavy emphasis on continuing a thought through dialogue before each edit. It focuses too heavily on exposition, forgetting that montage is a visual element of storytelling. While october may be a silent film, it's metric montage hardly needs any words. This is an advancement of the Eisenstein style coupled with a misunderstanding of what the power of metric montage's repetition in beats.

Requiem Montage

This is a amalgamation of the montages in Requiem For a Dream. The lack of actual context forces a much more intellectual interpretation of the imagery; the dilation of pupils and subtitles of "Fall" or "Winter" communicate the passage of time in what is almost a blur to a viewer. In this film the images of morning coffee and repetition suggest the routine nature of drug addiction.You aren't given any context for the things going on. You're forced to pay attention to the images, the eyes dialating signaling getting high, the pills suggesting a daily dose.
