Are South Africa Cricket World Cup chokers?

Are South Africa Cricket World Cup chokers? | South africa | Scoop.it

On paper, South Africa’s loss to England at the ICC Cricket World Cup on Sunday may not have been too shocking. However, take a closer look at the batting scorecard and its clear to see why that undesirable 'chokers' tag has been used to describe the Proteas yet again. Chasing a paltry 172 runs to win, victory looked almost certain with ‘Faf’ Du Plessis and AB de Villiers at the wicket needing just 48 runs from the remaining 18 overs. But a capitulation of the highest order saw Graeme Smith’s men collapse from 124 for three to 165 all out to give England, who had been embarrassed by a defeat to Ireland in their previous outing, an unlikely win.

Why They Hate Music: Mali Under Siege, Its Music Silenced

Why They Hate Music: Mali Under Siege, Its Music Silenced | South africa | Scoop.it

Why do they hate music? Without music, life would be a mistake. ~-Nietzsche, Twilight of the Idols (1889) Why do the religious extremists and dictators have such animus toward music? We saw the Taliban forbid music in Afghanistan, dictators like Stalin send musicians to the gulag, Chile’s Pinochet murder nueva cancion (new song movement that championed human rights) artists like Victor Jara, and Argentine generals who threatened the famous singer Mercedes Sosa with death and force her into exile. Ditto for Brazil during the 1960s and 1970s. Ditto for South Africa under apartheid, where black music was censored and forbade any political or social messages. Black musicians got past government censors by writing songs with metaphorical content, often fables about animals. They got their message across to the oppressed black majority.
