How to Build a Content Marketing Strategy - SEOmoz

How to Build a Content Marketing Strategy - SEOmoz | Sosiale Media | Scoop.it
As successful link building tactics change, companies and clients alike are seeking to understand how certain forms of link building can be translated into long-term content marketing campaigns.

Summary...

Below is the content strategy framework that Adria and I have implemented together for our clients. We've learned that this process isn't a quick win and that our most successful content marketing strategies have relied on dedicating at least 3 months to just research - market research, site audits, content audits, customer surveys, and customer interviews to name just a few.

Step 1: Researching the company

The first step in developing a content strategy framework is understanding the company.

Step 2: Data collection (and lots of it)

I believe in utilizing the data that we have available to make informed decisions. This applies specifically to content; the more we understand about the site and the customers, the more we are able to make informed and strategic decisions to the type(s) of content we want to produce. In order to do this, it's important to gather relevant data.

Step 3: Preparation and assessment

Now that new data has been collected from various channels, it's important to assess/analyze the data that has just been collected and see how it correlates with the data that you already have on-hand. During this stage, it's also critical to take a step back and make sure that the goals for the content have been clearly defined.

Step 4: Prospecting

This phase of the process is identifying individuals/sites who would be interested in the type of content the company will produce and engaging them at multiple points with the goal to develop relationships with key influencers.

Step 5: Create and promote the content

In this step, the "go" is to now create the pieces of content and follow both the internal protocols and sign off processes that were established in step three of the process. Ensure that editorial standards are being followed and assess that the content being created is actually phenomenal.

Step 6: Assess content performance

After the content has been released and promoted, it's time to assess how the content has performed and any other learnings that can be taken away from the process.

In a recent post for The Atlantic, Derek Thompson investigates what drives people to read content online. As a writer for a popular news site, it’s of interest to Thompson to find out what people are clicking on and why when navigating through the endless amount of web content available. Though it sounds like a boring study of analytics at first, his findings and references are actually super interesting.

Another insightful read.

Steven Mallach's curator insight, July 4, 2013 11:30 PM

Investigating how the consumer interacted with traditional media and how the social media differs is one of the most fascinating studies for marketing and communications fold to undertake.

Some (myself included) would argue that very little has changed since the newspaper was King of the Hill. The same rules to engaging with carefully selected demographics apply, the same headline rules, the same intro paragraphy rules.

Grabd the reader's attention and make sure they stick.

The difference is the social media channels go far beyond simple print in sharability, targeting can be much more precise and engagement is taken to a whole new MEASURABLE level.

So, everything changes, but everything stays the same.

Google Header Eats Los Angeles

Yes the Google+ Header just got bigger along with 41 other feature improvements to the leading search engine's social network. Recognizing that the most popular content on Facebook is pictures, Google+ boosted its ability to compete. Here is a quote from the Economic Times post:

"But the most compelling new attraction may be a new photo-management tool that promises to test how much control people want to cede to computers. It will also further blur the lines between a real moment in time and augmented reality."

James LaCorte's curator insight, May 20, 2013 3:38 PM

I have tested some of the changes out. I like the look and feel. They need to work on getting the masses over there, even if it is for the communities.

Social Search & the future of SEO

Social Search & the future of SEO | Sosiale Media | Scoop.it

How does social fit into the worlds of SEO and search? Bing's Duane Forrester and Catalysts' Dan Cristo highlighted the major changes in the industry at SES NY.

Metadata, title tags, etc. were once the gold standard of SEO, but now they’re the base line. The reality: If there is a big collection of people talking about a person, search engines are drawn to the person or site to try and understand what all the fuss is about. Unfortunately, the technology to truly hone in on these conversations and chatter remains in infancy.

Actually Brian, Matt Cutts recently stated in a video on Youtube that Google does takes social signals into heavy consideration when evaluating the worth of our content. In fact he stated they always have. I just watched the video about 3 weeks ago. In another video Matt Cutts even stated they are more concerned with identifying what people like or dislike, which is why they created the +1 button. When you +1 something on the web, you are recommending it to anyone in your Google+ circles, both on G+ and organic search. And, the +1 button also helps Google to gage the overall importance of an author and content online. Many links themselves are also coming from social networks, and all links on Google+ are "dofollow". Dont believe me? Go to your webmaster tools account check the links pointing to your site, Google+ links are weighted like any others. Also, they are crawled by Bing as well, and Bing does count backlinks from G+. So your assertions I'm afraid are not accurate.
