"‘TROUBLE UNDER WATER": UNRELEASED MUSIC FROM SEATTLE’S LEGENDARY U-MEN

"‘TROUBLE UNDER WATER": UNRELEASED MUSIC FROM SEATTLE’S LEGENDARY U-MEN | SongsSmiths | Scoop.it

Bands like The U-Men don’t come along often. A Seattle band at a time when the phrase “Seattle band” carried zero cultural cachet, The U-Men kitchen-sinked Gun Club rootsiness, classic garage rock ‘verb-and-twang, punk sneer, gothic darkness, and Ubu/Beefheart artiness into a single coherent sound that galvanized a hinterlands underground scene and directly influenced the grunge explosion

UNDER THE RADAR: Goat Girl - "Cracker Drool"

Out on 7″ in December, their latest single, Cracker Drool is another twangy, hypnotic excursion into the indie underworld. Matching the song perfectly, watch the monochrome road trip video as it gradually morphs from a dash of unease and suspense to a full on noirish nightmare.

UNDER THE RADAR: Twin Peaks - "With You"

Chicago’s Twin Peaks are releasing their next album as a series of 7-inch singles, where every month they release two new songs on 7″ vinyl and online.

They only press 300 copies of each 7″ but at the end of the year they’re gathering up all the songs to be released as a full-album limited-edition 12-inch.

For November they’ve shared the songs “With You” (side A) and “Just Because” (side B).

The forgotten New Yorker who changed the ‘80s music scene

The forgotten New Yorker who changed the ‘80s music scene | SongsSmiths | Scoop.it

When the members of New Order arrived in New York for their first North American gigs in 1980, they were greeted by a booking agent, a drug supplier, a tour guide and their own personal chef — all of whom were the same woman. The Brits were just one of dozens of new wave and post-punk acts imported across the Atlantic by New Yorker Ruth Polsky.

During her tenure as a talent booker at seminal Manhattan nightclubs Hurrah on West 62nd Street (1979 to 1982) and Danceteria on West 21st Street (1982 to 1986), she was the first to take chances on then-unknown bands such as Simple Minds, Echo and the Bunnymen, the Smiths, the Psychedelic Furs and many more.

With disco and rock still dominant in the charts, Polsky had a rare ear for fresh sounds, and took chances in bringing them to the United States before most other club bookers would dare.

BLISTERING NICK CAVE & THE BIRTHDAY PARTY SETS IN ‘PLEASURE HEADS MUST BURN’ 1982/1983

The Birthday Party played the legendary Haçienda Club in Manchester once in 1982 and once in 1983, and, per Haçienda policy, both shows were videotaped for posterity. The Birthday Party’s two most recent releases at that point were also their two best albums, Prayers on Fire and Junkyard, and based on this footage there’s a strong argument that they were as good as any band in the world at that moment.

The shows were released under the title Pleasure Heads Must Burn on VHS by Ikon in 1983 and then again on DVD by Cherry Red in 2003.

Every inch of this release is abrasive, vital, essential.

 The Haçienda July 22nd, 1982:

Dead Joe

A Dead Song

Junkyard

Release the Bats

(Sometimes) Pleasure Heads Must Burn

Big Jesus Trash Can

The Haçienda, February 24th, 1983:

Hamlet (Pow! Pow! Pow!)

Pleasure Avalanche

6” Gold Blade

Wild World

The Six Strings That Drew Blood

Sonny’s Burning

She’s Hit

Nick the Stripper promo video

The Ace Cinema, Brixton, UK, November 25th, 1982:

Fears of Gun

Hamlet (Pow! Pow! Pow!)

Trade Union Club, Sydney, Australia, May 14th, 1983:

Deep in the Woods

VPRO TV Studios, Götterdämmerung 2000, Netherlands, July 1982: Junkyard

LISTEN: PETER HOOK AND ANDY ROURKE TALK NEW ORDER, THE SMITHS, MANCHESTER AND MORE.

The latest episode of the Talkhouse podcast — which features musicians interviewing musicians — finds old friends, bassists and fellow Mancuinans Andy Rourke of The Smiths and Peter Hook of Joy Division and New Order talking a walk down memory lane in a 25-minute chat that finds the two reminiscing about how they met, their respective legal messes and more.

Hook’s appearance is in promotion of his recently published memoir “Substance: Inside New Order,” which leads Hook to ask Rourke if he’s read Morrissey’s autobiography:

Andy Rourke: “I’ve had a, ya know, a browse, a browse through it. I was just checking out what he’s saying about me, basically. Went through the index.”

Peter Hook: “Ya know what, that was the reason why I didn’t want to put an index in my book. Because I didn’t like the thought of Barney (Sumner) going in the bookshop and just browsing through the index. I wanted him to have to suffer it!”.
