UNDER THE RADAR: Eels – “Bone Dry”

Eels, the long-running project helmed by Mark Oliver Everett, released the fourth taste from the band’s upcoming 11th album, The Deconstruction.

The new single “Bone Dry” adds a bleak if-not propulsive aspect to the album.

“Bone Dry” rocks a little harder than the other recent Eels songs. It’s propelled by a hard-driving bassline and some reverb-heavy guitar twang. Everett goes full deadpan with his vocal, even when he’s intoning “sha-la-la” on the chorus, as he accuses someone else of drinking all his metaphorical blood.

The Ramones vs. the Sex Pistols: ‘These guys ripped us off!’

The Ramones vs. the Sex Pistols: ‘These guys ripped us off!’  | SongsSmiths | Scoop.it

On the very first day of recording sessions for their third album Rocket to Russia—August 21, 1977 to be exact—Ramones guitarist Johnny Ramone showed up at the former Episcopalian Church that housed Media Sound Studios in Midtown Manhattan, bringing with him a copy of the Sex Pistols’ “God Save the Queen” single.

He was pissed off, complaining that his band had been “robbed” by the infamous British punk group’s ferocious buzzsaw sound. Johnny told Ed Stasium, their audio engineer, that the new Ramones album needed to have sharper production than the Sex Pistols.

“These guys ripped us off and I want to sound better than this,” he said.

The Women of Post-Punk and Goth

The Women of Post-Punk and Goth | SongsSmiths | Scoop.it

March 8th is International Women’s Day, and we are celebrating by acknowledging our heroes in post-punk and goth who just so happen to be women. Some may argue that the first post-punk single was Magazine’s Shot by Both Sides, which came out 40 years ago on January 20th.

But many musical scholars insist that honor in fact goes to a woman. Siouxsie and the Banshees debut single Hong Kong Garden was a game changer. Released on August 18th, 1978, the Steve Lillywhite produced song created a sound that everyone took inspiration from. This invariably caused lazy journalists would then begin the sexist epidemic of writing off most women daring to be as creative as Siouxsie as sounding exactly like her—which no one did!

Andy Warhol meets the Cars: The notorious NSFW ‘nude’ version of the ‘Hello Again’ video

Andy Warhol meets the Cars: The notorious NSFW ‘nude’ version of the ‘Hello Again’ video | SongsSmiths | Scoop.it

Technically the “Hello Again” video was co-directed by Andy Warhol and Don Munroe, who had worked with Warhol on his various cable access TV shows in the early 1980s and later Warhol’s short-lived MTV series, but other than showing up I can’t imagine that Warhol actually that all had much else to do with it.

The stories behind NME’s greatest covers – Neil Spencer: Joy Division, 14 June 1980

The stories behind NME’s greatest covers – Neil Spencer: Joy Division, 14 June 1980 | SongsSmiths | Scoop.it

Ian Curtis and Joy Division. Photograph: Anton Corbijn.

This was an important cover for us. The paper had been off the newsagents’ shelves for six weeks thanks to an NUJ strike over pay. During that time Ian Curtis of Joy Division had taken his own life, meaning our tribute to him had been sitting on ice, along with Anton Corbijn’s striking and sadly appropriate cover shot, showing Curtis glaring back moodily, as if taking leave.

Corbijn’s shot of Joy Division (taken at a London underground station) perfectly captured the post-punk aesthetic of Orwellian austerity (youth unemployment was through the roof) and the tawdry state of the country’s infrastructure. It’s a revolutionary cover in that its selling point, the band, is confined “below the fold” of the paper – unseen by punters – and its star is further limited to the bottom right, yet the unfolded cover becomes a powerful portrait of a moment in time.

NME would lose ground to the sharp colour and frivolity of Smash Hits and the Face, to become belittled as a mere “inkie”, but I remain fond of its black/white/red rigour, which fitted the paper’s ambitions to be literate and arty, iconoclastic and funny: a new beast on the block. Even the small ads (“shiny black PVC with zips”) helped to make it an aspirational cultural crossroads.

UNDER THE RADAR: Parquet Courts - "Wide Awake"

Here is the title track from Parquet Courts’ upcoming new album, out on 18th May via Rough Trade. Wide Awake! is a shout along anthem propelled on something akin to tropical percussion and a sparse, funky and naggingly insistent guitar refrain.
