Abstract

Abstract | Somaly Mam: Changemaker | Scoop.it

Somaly Mam was born and raised in Cambodia, although there are no records as to when she was exactly born or as to whom her parents are. In the early years of her life she was thought to be an orphan, until a man found her and claimed her as his own. This however, did not work as well it sounds. She was forced into slavery at the age of 14. Prior to this however, she lived her life abused by the man who she thought was going to be the one to save her. At the age of 14 she was then sold into a brothel and forced into prostitution. At this young age, she was married; her husband beat, tortured, and raped her. In her spare time she was mandated to have 5-6 clients a day. Outside of having clients, she was beat, locked up, tortured, raped, and threatened with death daily. Fearing the worst would come out of this life, she escaped and made a fresh start for herself. A French aid worker helped her to escape to Paris, but Mam would only return to Cambodia to help girls who experienced similar things she did. In 1996 she founded the AFESIP, which rescued, housed, and rehabilitated women who where enslaved and forced into prostitution. Over the course of her life she has helped to rescue over 4,000 women from a certain death. In June 2007, she co-founded the Somaly Mam foundation, which was formed in the United States that has similar goals, and aspirations as the AFESIP did. As a result of her dedicated work she has been recognized with countless awards and honors. One of the more notable would be TIME magazine’s 100 most influential people in 2009, Glamour magazine’s Women of the Year in 2006, and a CNN hero in 2006.

Fighting Back, One Brothel Raid at a Time

Fighting Back, One Brothel Raid at a Time | Somaly Mam: Changemaker | Scoop.it
The global movement against human trafficking is making progress. In Cambodia, I followed one of my heroes, Somaly Mam, in a raid on a brothel with under-age girls.
Quinn and Sam's insight:

This is an article written by Nicholas Kristof praising Somaly Mam for the work she does in raiding brothels.  Kristof gives a brief overview of the process and the difficulties Somaly Mam has encountered due to her work.  He also describes a situation involving Somaly Mam's daughter, which normally would have halted someone's work process, but it only made Somaly Mam fight more for the elimination of brothels.

Quinn and Sam's insight:

This website is a good place to find out some of the basic information regarding Somaly Mam. Her website is a good resource to be able to find links to get more information about her. This is a stereotypical website that a foundation puts out as a starting place in doing research. It provides another link to a part of the movie in Half the Sky and gives opportunity to support her and her foundation.
