The pay as you throw program households are charged for the amount of solid waste, or regular household trash, that they throw away.  This was created in an effort to encourage more recycling and reduce the amount of materials thrown away. 

Where as traditional pay for service would include your communities trash collection system every week.  In addition to the traditional service, households can still put forth an effort to conserve the amount of waste disposal by dropping of hazerdous materials at a local collectional agency.

Typical solid waste in landfills consist of everyday household trash like old packaging or waste, things like old appliances require special disposal procedures required by law due to the harmful causes to the environment

The operation of a modern day landfill serves to dispose of waste aterials through burial.  Landfills are the oldest form of waste treatment.  The waste are first confined to the smallest are possible, then compacted to reduce size and volume, lastly they are covered with layers of soil.  The area where the waste is stored is contructed of many different layers to prevent leakage into the groundwater system; such as concrete or pipes to release hazardous waste chemicals. 

Some concerns such as leachate which is where water escapes from a landfill site.  If this water is not collected it can contaminate the natural water sources.

Methane gas is caused from the decomposition of organic matter that is an explosive gas produced near landfills.

-Close loop recycling- Re-manufacturing a product into the same product.  For example recyling a soda can back into a recyling can.  This type of recyling is encouraged  because it causes a demand for recyclable materials. 

-Open loop recycling- Material from one product is transformed into another product. For example plastics can be changed into outside furniture.
