Concentrated solar photovoltaic, now on your rooftop

Concentrated solar photovoltaic, now on your rooftop | Solar power and renewable energies | Scoop.it

r The most efficient solar cells are those that convert incoming concentrated solar power via lenses. Because of their complex nature, concentrated solar power arrays have been mostly installed in open areas, but a team of engineers at Penn State are set to shift this paradigm. They’ve designed a translation motion micro-array that can concentrate solar power efficiently even in crowded areas, say on your rooftop.

Concentrated photovoltaics (CPV) are usually very bulky, so to make a rooftop affordable system the team  combined miniaturized gallium-arsenide photovoltaic cells, 3D-printed plastic lens arrays, and a moveable focusing mechanism.

Africa's new breed of solar energy entrepreneurs

Africa's new breed of solar energy entrepreneurs | Solar power and renewable energies | Scoop.it

African economies may be booming, but continued growth and quality of life are being jeopardised by lack of power.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates 585 million people in sub-Saharan Africa lack access to electricity, with the electrification rate as low as 14.2% in rural areas.

The problem is most acute in East Africa, where only 23% of Kenyans; 10.8% of Rwandans; and 14.8% of Tanzanians have access to an electricity supply, according to the World Bank.

Apple Gears Up to Challenge Tesla in Electric Cars

Apple Gears Up to Challenge Tesla in Electric Cars | Solar power and renewable energies | Scoop.it

Apple Inc. has revolutionized music and phones. Now it is aiming at a much bigger target: automobiles.

The Cupertino, Calif., company has several hundred employees working secretly toward creating an Apple-branded electric vehicle, according to people familiar with the matter. The project, code-named “Titan,” initially is working on the design of a vehicle that resembles a minivan, one of the people said.

SOLAR IMPULSE - The First Round-The-World Solar Flight

SOLAR IMPULSE - The First Round-The-World Solar Flight | Solar power and renewable energies | Scoop.it

After the Solar Impulse prototype’s 8 world records, when it became the first solar airplane ever to fly through the night, between two continents, and across the United States, it is time for Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg to move on to the final phase of the adventure: the 2015 round-the-world flight.

A great historic first: for such an adventure, as for any premiere, there are no references. We were, and will be, faced with a number of challenges, leading us to push the limits of technological, human and piloting performance.

Pay As You Go Sunshine: How Solar Energy and Mobile Phones are Powering the Developing World

Pay As You Go Sunshine: How Solar Energy and Mobile Phones are Powering the Developing World | Solar power and renewable energies | Scoop.it
Every night, something unusual happens in Samuel Kimani’s home on the outskirts of Nairobi, Kenya. Samuel, 48, lives with his wife Mary and their three children. Their family supports itself day-to-day through their main source of income, their cow Baraka, whose milk is collected daily and sold directly to customers for about $1.80 a day. Their township has few amenities and grid electricity is available only to the few who can afford it. But at Samuel’s house, two bright lights shine all through the evening.
