The feed-in tariffs will bring renewable energy to Africa

An independent climate security charity, examining the socio-economic impact on 13 African countries if the German FiT model was implemented.Renewable energy feed-in tariffs in Africa could boost its economy whilst combating climate change, finds a new study developed for the World Future Council.

The report concluded renewable solar energy feed-in tariff policies (FiT) are a promising mechanism to unlock renewable energy development in Africa. Aimed at African policy makers, civil society and the private sector, the report provides an in-depth analysis of existing and drafted FiT policies in 13 African countries: Algeria, Botswana, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Mauritius, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania and Uganda.

Moreover, the decentralised nature of FiTs provides the opportunity to empower communities and to revitalise local democracy and self-governance by allowing for alternative models of ownership and governance.Several African countries have already opened up their electricity market to independent renewable energy pv inverter producers. However, these countries have even more potential for local economic development if their policies are amended, by including a more streamlined and transparent administrative process and a lower entry threshold.

     The polysilicon industry were plagued by overcapacity in 2012.Because of the overcapacity in 2011,the inventory of polysilicon industry had reached 2.5 million tonnes.In addition,the wafer suppliers who need the funds dumped the polysilicon inventory to get the liquidity.The silicon caused serious polysilicon spot price decline.After the prices fell by 59% in 2011,the high-purity polysilicon prices fell by 47% in 2012 and down to its lowest point ever, $ 15.35.

The market survey report pointed out that about 50 polysilicon manufacturers were faced with the bankruptcy since September 2011.The global polysilicon production fell to 235,000 tonnes in 2012,it fell by nearly 8% more than 255,000 tonnes in 2012.Production of 235,000 metric tons is enough for the world 33 to 34GW of PV installed capacity in 2012.But the shipments of 13 Public PV module manufacturers explained that it is only enough for 30 to 31GW installed PV power plant.

The target of 35 GW has been confirmed, and will soon be announced.The reason for making the adjustment is that the PV industry has been developing very quickly.In the last ten years, China’s solar PV cumulative installed capacity has already grown by 67 times the average annual growth.

      For the fourth time in two years China has increased its solar energy target from 21GW by 2015 to 35GW.However, at the beginning of January it was reported that ASP declines in 2012, driven by industry overcapacity throughout the PV solar inverter supply chain, had forced over 350 companies in China to stop operations entirely.

     According to media reports, Beijing authorities increased the smog alert for its 20 million residents and temporarily shut down more than 100 factories due to record hazardous levels in January.

On 14 January, China announced its intention to join the International Renewable Energy Agency, which would make it the 161st member of the body.By 2020 the government expects that total installed capacity of solar energy power will reach 50GW.

 Scientists at an American university have developed a silicon-based fibre that can produce solar power, opening the door to the possibility of solar energy woven into fabric, possibly clothing.The findings were announced today by a team of chemists and physicists led by Professor John Badding of Penn State University.The technology uses high pressure chemistry to deposit crystalline silicon semiconductor materials onto an optical fibre.

   The result is a fibre thinner than the width of a human hair that can function as a solar cell in the same way as any regular pv inverter.We can take the silicon fibres and weave them together into a fabric with a wide range of applications such as power generation, battery charging, chemical sensing, and biomedical devices.The technology opens up the possibility of clothing that could be used, say, to recharge mobile phones.This material could then be connected to electronic devices to power them and charge their batteries.

Woven, fibre-based solar energy would be lightweight, flexible configurations that are portable, foldable, and even wearable,and the military especially is interested in designing wearable power sources for soldiers in the field.

India to announce 4.4GW of solar inverter projects in 2013, although only 350MW is expected to be online by the end of this year, according to consultants Bridge to India.Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh will be the only states to deliver any capacity, Bridge to India’s quarterly report, the India Solar Compass, predicts, with 200MW expected in Andhra Pradesh and 150MW in Tamil Nadu.

The Times of India has reported that Tamil Nadu would generate around 40% of India’s solar energy by 2015, predominantly through its rooftop solar inverter programme.At an international workshop on renewable energy, climate change and energy management in Chennai, India, Chairman and Director of the Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency Sudeep Jain told attendees, “We need to develop better technologies in this sector. Such expertise are not going to come from developed nations. Our technical institutions and research centres should come out with such projects.”

In a survey of over 400 PV inverter purchasers more that 90% of respondents expressed good warranties and back-up support were "important for most projects" or "critical for all projects".Valued PV inverter warranties and after sales service are key reasons for installers purchasing decisions, according to a survey undertaken by IMS Research, a part of market analytical firm IHS. Leading the pack of around 74 brands in the highly competitive PV inverter market was SMA Solar Technology, which garnered more than 35% of the votes for warranty and after sales support, according to the report, PV Inverter Customer Survey – World – 2012. Sam Wilkinson, manager of IMS Research’s PV inverter and BoS research and analysis, said: “Considering the highly competitive nature of the PV market, attractive warranty and service offerings and a good reputation for offering excellent after-sales support are becoming a highly important way in which PV inverter suppliers can strengthen their brand and gain market share.SMA Solar has been losing market share for several years as the number of competitors increase and improve product offerings, though remains the market share leader with over 30% global share. In the branding stakes and number two market leading supplier was Fronius. However, new entrants in the top 10 included microinverter supplier, and primarily in the US.

 NPD Solarbuzz has identified GT Advanced Technologies, Meyer Burger, Applied Materials and Apollo Solar as the leading equipment suppliers to look out for this year. The market analyst group expects these tool suppliers to have PV-specific revenues in excess of US$400 million. Only eight PV equipment suppliers are forecast to have PV-specific revenues during 2012 in excess of US$100 million, compared to 23 in 2011. Solar PV equipment spending was US$3.6 billion for 2012 from US$12.9 billion in 2011, according to new research in the latest NPD Solarbuzz PV Equipment Quarterly report.

     Just 24 months ago, GT Advanced Technologies, Meyer Burger, Applied Materials, and Centrotherm each reported PV inverter backlogs at or above US$1 billion. However, successive quarters with minimal new order intake, coupled with strong de-bookings, have reduced PV inverter equipment backlogs to levels last experienced in the first half of 2006.

     NPD Solarbuzz said that during 2012, performing a market-share analysis for key tool suppliers to the PV solar industry was of limited value due to a large part of revenues based on tools shipped at the end of 2011 or new shipments required by legacy contracts. Indeed, the focus of equipment suppliers has now shifted from gaining market share within the PV solar industry to deciding how to restructure manufacturing and streamline PV R&D.

 The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) has declared the California Solar Initiative crosses 1GW milestone.With a goal of 1,940MW of installed power by the end of 2016, CPUC states that California has installed enough solar inverter capacity to power 100,000 homes and businesses and avoid building two conventional power plants. The CSI has a budget of US$2.4 billion over 10 years.

The CSI has exceeded expectations of think-tanks like SunCentric which had in 2011 predicted that the CSI would not even hit the 800MW mark.At the end of 2012, the programme had installed 1,066MW in its general market and affordable housing PV inverter programs, helping to reach 55% of the 1,940MW goal, with an additional 332MW (17% of the total goal) in pending projects.

The CSI’s Single-family Affordable Homes (SASH) programme has installed solar inverter systems on more than 2,000 low income homes throughout the state, while the Multifamily Affordable Solar Housing (MASH) programme has installed more than 17MW of solar on affordable housing residences, with another 12MW in pending applications.The CSI rebates decrease over time to help create a self-sustaining solar industry. In most parts of the state the rebates are up to 92% lower than they were at the start of the program in 2007, but CPUC states that participation in the programme continues to increase year over year.

German investment company acquires 50MW solar inverter farm, northern Germany from an unnamed company.The 38 hectare solar farm was developed by Johann Bunte Construction and has 218,000 modules from Canadian Solar and SunEarth/SiG Solar. Voltwerk electronics, a subsidiary of the Bosch Group and Power-One, supplied inverters.

The Alhorn park has been estimated to generate about 47 million kilowatt hours of electricity annually for 13,500 households.Detlef Schreiber Managing Director at CEE said: "The year 2012 in the PV sector was extremely successful for CEE. Our company has orders for solar inverter projects for just under 110MW, and has now acquired a PV portfolio worth 174MW. The company also seeks continue working on projects in Germany and looking for investment opportunities in other European countries.”CEE did not provide any information about the financial terms of the transaction.

 Module manufacturing start-up, Astana Solar opens PV module plant ramping its newly completed 100MW nameplate assembly plant in the Republic of Kazakhstan.

 

   A subsidiary of NAC Kazatomprom JSC, one of the worlds largest uranium-mining company’s, Astana Solar inverter has already received supply contracts for its modules from uranium-mining firm, KATCO which is a joint venture business between France-based AREVA and Kazakhstan-based Kazatomprom, both nuclear power providers.Astana Solar power inverter is also using UMG-Silicon produced by KazSilicon, which is part of a bigger project, KazPV that the country is investing in to provide an integrated solar product for markets within the country and as well as for export.

 

    The KazPV project is part of a partnership signed between Kazakhstan and France in October 2010 and includes technology supplied from French business.Initially, Astana Solar inverter is planning to ramp to 50MW capacity in the first quarter of 2013, with further expansions dependent on market demand and UMG-Silicon production expansion at KazSilicon.

We can cook for a group of up to 60 people per reflector.

  The glass and aluminum panels used in Schapers design are either 10-square-meters or (107-square-foot) or 16-square-meters (170-square-foot) in size.Some are placed at a 45-degree angle while others rest almost horizontal, facing the sky. The reflectors can generate temperatures hotter than 1,020 degrees Celsius (1,868 degrees Fahrenheit).

  Once the powerful heat reaches the cooker, it is shared between a cauldron, a griddle to make tortillas, and an oven. The solar energy panels can be used in restaurants or bakeries.The solar industry system is costly to build, between $4,000 and $5,000 depending on size. However, each reflector saves the equivalent of 60 liters (16 gallons) of gas each month.

Aberdeen streets to get Wi-Fi bins offering wireless internet powered by solar energy.From 2013, solar-powered litter bins offering wireless internet will be placed on the streets around the city of Aberdeen in Scotland.The £246,500 Big Belly bins project is being funded by the Aberdeen City Council and Aberdeen Inspired, which represents the city’s Business Improvement District.

The Big Belly bins will be fitted with a BP solar energy panel which has a 20-year warranty. Electricity generated from the solar inverter panel powers a 12v battery. The bins are also fitted with an electronic device that has the ability to notify authorities when the bin is full. This same device is also able to provide wireless internet free of charge for visitors to the city. Visitors will be able to connect to the Wi-Fi hotspots to access up-to-date city guides and receive information on the latest deals in local shops and restaurants.

The bins have also been designed with waste compactors which crush the items in the bin to create more space, resulting in the bins being emptied less often compared with standard bins.Following a successful trial, the full roll-out of 60 bins is expected to be completed by next spring.

Sunnyside is told the Hanwella-based facility, which officially opened this week, has been designed to conserve around 22,000 kW per year.New Zealand dairy giant Fonterra has opened Sri Lanka's first solar energy powered milk chilling centre. The centre, which features 32 solar panels with a 3.24 kW capacity, is one of nine Fonterra chilling centres, located across five districts - Colombo, Nuwara Eliya, Kurunegala, Puttalam and Matale.

By 2017, annual installations are expected to be over 5.7GW, bringing the market's cumulative grid-tied solar capacity to 13GW over the next five years, details GTM’s report Solar pv inverter in Latin America & The Caribbean 2013: Markets, Outlook & Competitive Positioning.

The report singles out Chile, Mexico, and Brazil which have the most potential for growth. There has also been development in other markets such as Peru, Ecuador, and the Caribbean island nations.Mexico is the last of the three markets with potential for meaningful near-term growth. Unlike Chile and Brazil, in Mexico the framework for the rapid growth of solar energy, both distributed and utility-scale generation, is already in place. Net-metering was enacted in 2007, and this fact alone immensely simplifies development throughout the country. With regard to utility-scale development, independent power producers have been gaining a foothold, especially with regard to renewables. The national electric utility, CFE has already constructed two pilot projects and has also signed a PPA with a 46.8MW project being developed by Sonora Energy Group.

The conclusion that new solar inverter installations in the region will reach 5,700MW a year by 2017 is astounding, given that it is already 2013 and the market is basically starting from a standing start.

Jamaica receives strong response to 115MW renewable energy tender to its call for renewable energy projects following the issuing of a 115MW renewable energy tender.

In November OUR published its request for proposals for the allocation of 115MW renewable solar energy capacity on a build, own and operate basis. The deadline for submitting proposals is 2 April 2013.

In order to meet the Jamaican government’s target to increase the amount of electricity it derives from renewable sources, 115MW of renewable energy capacity is required to be commissioned by 2015.Jamaica’s government press agency JIS revealed that prospective bidders attended a pre-bid meeting on 17 January and that so far OUR has received 85 renewable solar energy project proposals.

The meeting was held in order to clarify any issues relating to the procurement.

Proposed utility-scale PV inverter projects will be evaluated and benefit from a maximum feed-in tariff of US$0.26 per kWh.

WWF and FirstSolar claim the report debunks common perceptions that the development of large PV inverter installations is incompatible with habitat conservation aims.

Concerns that the widespread development of large-scale solar PV would have a negative impact on global biodiversity have been downplayed in a report by WWF and FirstSolar.

The report has calculated that if all of the world’s electricity demand by 2050 was met with solar photovoltaics alone, only 1% of the global land area would need to be used.The report focuses on case studies Indonesia, Madagascar, Mexico, Morocco, South Africa, Turkey and the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, all regions with diverse natural environments and significant potential for widespread development of solar PV.

It concludes that PV inverter technology, when well planned, does not conflict with conservation goals and clarifies that countries should not have to choose between solar PV and space for humans and nature.

As climate change increasingly threatens people and the natural world, it is more important than ever to work for the rapid and wide-scale adoption of well sited, responsibly operated renewable solar energy power facilities. Environmental protection and renewable energy can and are developing in parallel," said Samantha Smith, leader of the WWF's Global Climate & Energy Initiative.

The Association believes that by the end of 2013, nearly 400GWh of electricity will have been generated meeting 0.6% of Austria’s electricity needs by solar power. It also claims that the PV inverter sector in Austria employs 6,000 jobs.

Incentives granted in 2012 have led to a PV capacity increase of 200MW for systems over 5 kW, said the Association. Another 30MW of solar energy  systems up to 5kW were installed during the past year.

Furthermore, in September, the Austrian government had doubled its renewables budget to €50 million for 2013, set to decrease by €1 million annually.However, the Austrian PV Association also notes discrepancies in the pledged funding.

German solar inverter manufacturer SMA’s Sunny Central CP XT inverters meet South Africa’s grid connection code and  has announced its central inverters officially comply with the Grid Connection Code for Renewable Power Plants (RPPs) set by the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA).

The grid connection regulations became effective in November 2012 and define technical and design requirements which must be complied and implemented immediately by all renewable energy power plants operating in South Africa. Power plants will only be allowed to feed electricity into the local utility grids if they adhere to the regulations.

 

SMA has confirmed that its Sunny Central CP XT inverters, along with their features, meet all terms prescribed by NERSA for solar inverters. The inverters already meet the requirements of several other countries including Germany, Japan and the US.

 

This PV power plant is scheduled to connect to the utility grid in mid-2013.In August 2012, SMA was awarded a contract to supply 84 Sunny Central 800 CP inverters for the 75MW Kalkbult project in the northwest of South Africa.

 Germany added record solar power inverter capacity in 2012 but expects quieter 2013, but is likely to see much more modest growth in 2013.  

    This is a new annual record for the country and than double the government’s target for 2012 of 3,500MW. Figures released by the German environment ministry have confirmed that solar inverter installations in 2012 topped 7,634MW, up 2% on 2011’s 7,485MW.And according to Germany’s solar association BSW, favourable conditions meant the total output of solar power generated last year was up 45% on 2011 at 28TWh.

 

   But the ministry has confirmed that it expects the growth in new installations over 2013 to be in the order of 4,000-4,500MW.This lower projected growth is due to the latest cuts to Germany’s feed-in tariff (Fit), which were brought in over the autumn to curb increases to household energy bills.

 

    According to reports in local newspaper Die Welt, cited by Bloomberg, the state of Saxony is planning to present proposals to the German parliament for reforming the Fit.
