High-efficiency solar panel pricing fell 37 percent in 2017

High-efficiency solar panel pricing fell 37 percent in 2017 | Solar Energy projects & Energy Efficiency | Scoop.it

According to the IEA, the spot price for ‘mono crystalline’ solar panels fell from 72¢/W to 45¢/W over 2017. That 27¢/W drop represents a 37.5% fall. Mono crystalline solar panels offer at least 10% more efficiency than poly crystalline in the same hardware package/ size/ weight, and today – in key markets – are only 6% more expensive.

Is evaporating water the future of renewable energy?

Is evaporating water the future of renewable energy? | Solar Energy projects & Energy Efficiency | Scoop.it

Forget the sun and wind — evaporating water could be the next big source of renewable energy, said James Temple at Technology Review. So-called evaporation-driven engines "generate power from the motion of bacterial spores that expand and contract as they absorb and release air moisture." Evaporation continues 24/7, so the engines, which sit on the water's surface, could provide power nonstop — unlike solar panels.

Solar power is the fastest growing source of global energy

Solar power is the fastest growing source of global energy | Solar Energy projects & Energy Efficiency | Scoop.it

Solar power was the fastest-growing source of global energy last year, overtaking growth from all other forms, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). The spurt is largely attributed to lower prices and changing government policies encouraging a shift away from traditional power sources, such as coal. China, for example, has played an important role in renewable energy's prominence, accounting for almost half of all new solar panels installed worldwide.

Renewable energy investors see opportunity in Puerto Rico's demolished grid

Renewable energy investors see opportunity in Puerto Rico's demolished grid | Solar Energy projects & Energy Efficiency | Scoop.it

Some politicians and renewable energy investors see a golden opportunity in the crisis to use federal funds to re-invent the U.S. territory’s grid as a storm-resistant network that relies less on costly coal and oil imports and more on local wind, solar, and batteries. If it happens, it could ease power bills on an island that struggles with the second-costliest electricity in the United States, behind Hawaii, as well as infrastructure prone to failing in the region’s frequent hurricanes.

The Future of Renewable Energy Could Be Harnessing the Evaporating Water All Around Us

The Future of Renewable Energy Could Be Harnessing the Evaporating Water All Around Us | Solar Energy projects & Energy Efficiency | Scoop.it

In a paper published today in Nature Communications, a Columbia University-led team outlined the energy production possible by harnessing electricity from water evaporating off the surface of a lake. Like wind and solar energy, this basic action is happening all around us, says coauthor Ozgur Sahin of Columbia. "Evaporation has the potential to be greater than wind power and closer to solar power," he says.

You might say his solution is up in the air.

Even a 1-degree rise in global temps could increase the likelihood of extreme weather — including floods, droughts, and heat waves — in the U.S.

Even in that best-case scenario of only a 1-degree rise, the probability of extreme climatic events is still likely to increase throughout most of North America, Europe, and East Asia, the study said. The frequency of extreme climate and weather events is already increasing, and many experts say man-made climate change as an important motivating factor.

The transport sector is responsible for a third of global energy demand and one-sixth of global greenhouse gas emissions. It is also the sector with the lowest penetration of renewable energy.

Worldwide, there were nearly one billion passenger vehicles and 335 million commercial vehicles on the road in 2015. This number has been rising steadily over the past few decades, fueled by rising economic growth around the world. In China alone, more than 21 million passenger cars were sold in 2015, up from only 6 million in 2008.

The Promise & Perils Of Renewable Energy & Microgrids For Puerto Rico

The Promise & Perils Of Renewable Energy & Microgrids For Puerto Rico | Solar Energy projects & Energy Efficiency | Scoop.it

The electrical grid on Puerto Rico has been devastated by recent hurricanes. Should it be fixed or replaced with resilient microgrids and renewable energy installations?

Puerto Rico depends almost entirely on oil-fired generating plants, resulting in some of the highest utility rates in the nation — second only to Hawaii. It is estimated 12% of the electricity it does generate is lost to theft or chaotic billing procedures, which is 3 times the rate among mainland utility companies.
