Home Solar Battery Storage Systems Are Coming

Home Solar Battery Storage Systems Are Coming | Solar Business | Scoop.it

Before net metering, the only way to store daytime-produced solar energy was to use a battery storage system. These systems — generally composed of a bank of lead-acid batteries, a charge controller, solar panels and an inverter — continue to be popular for off-grid use. However, net metering is more efficient (zero round-trip energy loss) and less expensive (no batteries or maintenance required), so the fastest growth over the last decade has been in grid-connected net metered systems.

Ironically, there is renewed interest in battery backup systems because utilities are placing limits on net metering. So rather than connect the solar panels directly to the grid and "run the meter backwards" during the day, people are essentially storing their own electricity in home battery systems — thereby avoiding caps and special charges that may apply to net-metered systems.

Solar Powered Innovations in Humanitarian Emergencies

Solar Powered Innovations in Humanitarian Emergencies | Solar Business | Scoop.it

The use of solar powered household devices in humanitarian emergencies is gaining grounds. Solar power ensures the fulfillment of the Sphere minimum standards. It also cuts costs and addresses cross-cutting issues such as gender and environment. A recent field study on the use of solar powered household products among IDPs in Hargeisa Somalialand highlights the benefits.

Earth quakes, floods, extreme droughts, civil strife, war, and political instability; the common denominator is that lives and livelihoods are at stake. Needs are urgent and grave and funding resources are scarce no matter the type of humanitarian disaster.

"We studied a novel photoanode structure inspired by butterfly wing scales with potential application on dye-sensitized solar cell in this paper. Quasi-honeycomb like structure (QHS), shallow concavities structure (SCS), and cross-ribbing structure (CRS) were synthesized onto a fluorine-doped tin-oxide-coated glass substrate using butterfly wings as biotemplates separately."

Graph of the Day: New US solar installation every 2.4 minutes : Renew Economy

Graph of the Day: New US solar installation every 2.4 minutes : Renew Economy | Solar Business | Scoop.it
A new solar installation is installed in US every 2.4 minutes. Gas, however, accounts for tiny fraction of new capacity. Coal is zero.

The US solar market is surging. Installations for 2014 are expected to jump to 6.6GW in 2014, a rise of more than one third from 2013, and double the rate of 2012. According to GreenTech Media, that rate is expected to nearly double gain by 2016.

GTM say the solar PV is expected to rise by one third, with the fastest growth (61 per cent) in the residential sector, with California and New York performing particularly well. GTM says that in 2014 there will be a completed solar installation every 2.4 minutes in the US.
