Measuring Sexuality

Measuring Sexuality | Sociology of gender | Scoop.it
diane gusa's insight:
This activity involves walking students through an abridged history of sexuality categories and measurements, using their own sexual identities as examples. Freud, Kinsey, and Klein are discussed as all measuring sexuality in different ways, and thus collecting different data and reaching different conclusions. As sexuality measures change throughout the activity, the picture of student sexuality also changes, becoming more complex and less heteronormative. This shows both the effect of existing categorization systems on personal identities, and the effect of systems of measurement on the data measured. It concludes by questioning the very object of the measures, the idea of a stable sexual self that is being measured more-or-less accurately by these different scales, and thus introduces queer theory.

It is disturbing how hard this country is making it for woman to get healthcare. I may not be one for universal healthcare but things like Planned Parenthood have helped countless families. Regardless of how people feel about a small percentage of abortions they preform, Planned Parenthood it a great resource for woman. Abortions should be a woman;s choice, not a political stance. This just goes to show the larger repercussions of politics many seem to ignore.

Education Senior Spring's curator insight, May 26, 2016 1:55 AM
People often only focus on the racial aspect of educational inequality while often forgetting the gender side. The only reason people decide to get educated in the first place is to give them future career opportunities. Despite the fact that women in the United States might have the upper hand when getting educated, it is all ignored when they get to the real world. This issue is often thought of as a separate topic, but is actually very relevant to educational inequality.
