Antropology of Slavery: Black Africans and their Descendents in Spain (1492-1866). -- Research Project | Socioantropologia | Scoop.it

This project aims to analyze the evolution of the Black African population in Spain, centered on the peninsula but studying certain aspects of colonial America, examining the etnohistorical documentation preserved in Spanish Archives, iconographical representations and their presence in literature. We will study an unknown aspect of the history of Spain such as the customary presence of free and slave men a women from sub-Saharan origin and proceed to the recognition of their contributions. We intend to uncover the biographies of significant black Africans such as Juan Latino, a Latin professor from sixteenth century and Juan de Pareja, the “dark” slave of Velázquez. We are also working on the process of abolition, since Spain was the last European country to abolish slavery in Cuba (1886). We will also study the evolution of the perception of Black Africans in Spain, analysing multiple aspects from dress and food to the construction of social nets and relationships, offering reference material for anthropological debate, taking into consideration the perception of the Other in order to contribute to the construction of a new memory that will be respectful with minorities and differences.

History of the Conflict Between Religion and Science, by John William Draper, M. D., LL. D. | Socioantropologia | Scoop.it
