Behind the Burqa

Behind the Burqa | Social Studies Sr | Scoop.it

What’s behind the burqa? Too often—as British law enforcement and other international authorities have had to find out the hard way—it isn’t even a woman. Burqas have been worn to facilitate violent robberies, jail escapes, evade airport security checks and numerous other legal dodges.

It’s not just men who have purposefully employed this ruse. The case of Carnita Matthews centered on her false accusations that, during a routine traffic stop, an Australian police officer attempted to tear off the burqa she was wearing. Vehicle-based video camera recordings supported the officer’s denial of her charges. After being convicted of making a deliberately false statement, Matthews successfully appealed by claiming that the court could not prove whether she was the person who appeared in full burqa during the hearing. This appeal went through, despite the existence of a written statement that was shown to be in her hand. This cynical manipulation of Western legal systems by Muslims is emblematic of how Islam “weaponizes” the benign traditions and practices of civilized societies.

ethnicity isnt the problem, it is the natural lack of resources that causes so much conflict.

ethanrobert's curator insight, April 8, 2014 10:21 AM

It's interesting to think that most of the conflict in Sub Saharan Africa is due to ethnicity because of all the differences between ethnicities can cause things like civil wars. It's sad though that such differences would cause things like war and mass murders just because the ethnic beliefs between the groups matter more to kill the other over it. -Robert

Born in Kandahar, Afghanistan, in 1984, photographer Farzana Wahidy was only a teenager when the Taliban took over the country in 1996. At age 13 she was beaten in the street for not wearing a burqa, she recalls, and she describes those years as a "very closed, very dark time." To carry a camera would have been unthinkable.

AGAINST

Reason: pressure from family takes away freedom to choose

Reason: girls can be forced to marry at a young age

Makayla Matheu's curator insight, February 12, 2016 1:33 PM

So I saw this video on Facebook and it really shocked me. It shocked me how an 11 year old was going to be forced to marry this 40 year old man because her parents said so. If she did not agree they would kill her. She decided to speak out about it and a few weeks later she got killed. It is really sad how people take life for granted. She could have had a wonderful life but it had to be shortened. It just shocks me even more that she had the courage to do this. She knew her life was at stake but she risked it anyway. She is not the only girl who is being forced to marry older men, there are children younger than her. She wanted to speak out and ask people for help. She gave up her life for someone to hear her and now people have. The real question is, will anyone help her even though this message has been delivered?
