I found many of the statistics in this article to be very intriguing.  For starters, I did not realize that Twitter's follower base has now grown to over half that of Facebook's.  Furthermore, I had no idea that users spend close to the same amount of time on each site, because to me, Twitter is more of a place to simply post things, while Facebook is more of a place to browse.  Next, I was not surprised to hear that about 80% of Pinterest users are women, however, I was surprised when it stated that about half of the total number of users have children!  Last but not least, I personally have not heard much chatter about Google+, so it was surprising to find out that its follower count increases by about 33% each year!  All in all, it was a very interesting article to read through!

To no surprise, in the past couple of years Digital has far surpassed print in the way we consumer news. I can’t remember the last time I opened up a newspaper. Instead I turn to online news sites. It’s reports that over 60% of their Americans now consume their news online and traffic to news sites generated by social media has increased 57% since 2009. I believe that this trend is going to continue for the near future as more and more people become connected online. As shown in the Infographic already more than 2.4 billion people use the Internet, and over 1.4 billion use social media.  With these statistics more and more people are coming into contact with the breaking news other users share on these platforms. It has happened to me on multiple occasions where I find out about a break news story that is going viral on Twitter before I see it in the main stream.

Imagine being able to connect with friends, create status updates that can be as detailed as blog posts, check into and recommend local restaurants, find great news stories and share them with connections, upload images and even create short video snippets.

Sound familiar? If it sounds like Google+, with maybe some Vine and Foursquare thrown into the mix, there's good reason for that. When Google decided to create their new social network, it was a combination of a new platform and strong tie-ins to other platforms, like YouTube, which had been acquired.

How Social Media Impacts SEO and Site Ranking: infographic | Social Media sites | Scoop.it

Search engine optimization has not been dependent on a minimal number of factors for a long time now, such as number of times a keyword appeared on a page, and it continues to become a more complex web of on and off-page factors every month. One of the more recent factors that has had an impact on search ranking is social media.

This infographic breaks down ways that social media influences the visibility of your website in search results, including:

Social media can help search engines find and index your content faster Likes, shares, retweets, etc. indicates to search engine that content is new and interesting, often leading to a temporary increase in rankingsYour content will increase in search results for people connected to youIncreases domain authority and the number of inbound links to your website

Venkatesh - if I am able I give my site as much media support as I can. As a social media trainer I need to 'try out' media before I can teach others to use it and give an insight into which is useful and which is not. So I tend to put my site and what I am doing out on the various social media platforms at least twice a day - I don't over emphasise my site because that can be counter productive (people switch off if all they see from you is self-promotion) and so it is keeping your presence alive but not switching off potential clients by constant ME, ME, ME. I perform both SEO services and social media training for others (see - just a bit of self promotion LOL)
Stephanie Smetana's curator insight, July 9, 2013 7:17 PM

This infographic is a great way to depict many of the articles I've previously pointed out that cover SEO and social media. It is almost easier to explain the relationship in an image format, especially for those who don't have a background in SEO.

There are many other factors that go into how much social media truly affects SEO, so there is more to be explained after this. But this is a great introductory image. It also emphasizes the speed with which social media makes an impact.

Hot trends to watch, Social Media where to focus?

Steven Mallach's curator insight, April 30, 2013 11:00 PM

Trend watching is not only fun, it's one of the areas that every copywriter should keep an eye on.

Trends are ideal topics to give your content some snap. Topical issues and interest areas are also shared more often (obvioulsy).

So if you create content either for yourself, or for a client make sure that you have weekly recommendations for inclusion in their owned channel (blog / website) and their shared channels (social media).

There are plenty of great trend tracking software applications on the web, many of them free. Make use of them.

Keep an eye out for trends which are directly and indirectly related to client services and products and leverage this knowledge. Remember the sign of a great copywriter is to be able to apply knowledge laterally. The topic may not be directly related to everyday client activities, but will the audience find the trend interesting?

Remember to keep your copy light, humor never hurt either.

Social Media is an excellent resource for branding....and it's free.

Alex Ellsworth's curator insight, July 3, 2015 7:15 AM

This infographic shows that the most preferred way for consumers to get updates about a brand is through short updates via platforms like Facebook and Twitter. Naturally, people who are more involved on these platforms mention brands more in their own updates, and share things about brands. Because of this, brands have a huge opportunity to gain more buyers. By using a profile of someone who "likes" a brand, they can view what else they like, and target people who have similar interests. Not surprisingly, the thing most people like to see via their favorite brands on social networks is coupons and discounts. I think it would be helpful for brands to somehow construct a sort of virtual "punch card" for incentive; sharing something, referring likes, engaging with customer service, etc would give the customer a unique code for, say, 5-10% off their next purchase. This way, you are building a unique space on the internet, an interactive place where customers will want to return.
