Burger King has realized the power social media can have, and its importance among millenials. After discontinuing their chicken fries Burger King faced growing pressure from customers on social media sites and finally gave in and returned the product to stores.

 

Burger King wanted to to appeal to millennials with social-media focused campaigns. Burger King utilized a snapchat campaign, a new tumblr site for chicken fries, and even created an ebay page where fans could buy tshirts and bumper stickers supporting chicken fries!

WWE won a shorty award for their digital campaign leading up to and promoting wrestlemania 29. They did a "coming home" croudsourcing initiative with a video featuring photos of fans in forn of important ny/nj landmarks as well as being encouraged to hold a sign displaying their mileage from metlife stadium. all of the photos got woven together to the tune of Diddy's "Coming Home", the official them song of wrestlemania 29.

 

CEO Vince Mcmahon also  joined twitter a week before the event and awarded fans with a sneak peak at the set with a #bigreveal on his twitter account a day before wrestlemania.

A.1. is dropping the 'Steak' from its name in this delightful new commercial that has the sauce partying with new foods on Facebook.

In an effort to to shift the association of steak and A1 steak sauce as being perfect complements they launched a creative campaign decouple the sauce from its long-term partner. They released a funny youtube video that shows A.1. is initially "in a relationship" with Steak on Facebook when, all of a sudden, it starts getting friend requests from other foods: Pork, Salmon, even Lobster!

Betty White hosting SNL shows how powerful social media can be. In 2010 there as a massive facebook campaign petitioning to have the actress host SNL. This petition would go viral and would eventually end with Betty White hosting SNL!

This is one of the more odd yet successful marketing campaigns. The invisible children humanitarian group released a 30 minute video made Joseph Kony, an international court fugitive,  famous worldwide and got support for his arrest.This video reached over 100 million views on youtube in only six days and became one of the fastest growing video campaigns of all time.

Sports are an inherently social activity, so brands like Nike are a natural fit when it comes to social media marketing.
John Reda's insight:

Nike is one of the premier athletic brands and they utilize social media platforms to further cement this status. Particular for their twitter feeds, they really focus on responding and interacting to their followers and is actually one of the most active customer service feeds.

 

During the London Olympics, Nike outshined official sponsor Adidas through the use of social media throughout the capital and put up tons of billboards with everyday athletes featuring the hashtag #findgreatness

during the 2008 elections, Obama made his presence known on social media. He used twitter and facebook to differentiate himself and better position his campaign. He used his pages to interact with his followers as well. The most strategic part is that through the social media sites/apps the democratic party was able to get email addresses from followers and email them asking for votes!

Great flavor idea, but not the best execution....

This is one of my favorite social media marketing plans! Lay's had users submit ideas for new flavors and got almost 4 million submissions. When they narrowed it down they picked three flavors and sold them in stores for a limited time. Then they had customers vote on facebook and twitter for the ultimate winner!
