How Social Media is disscussed within Academic research. Criticisms  of Social Media.

There is an increasing trend towards using social media monitoring tools that allow marketers to search, track, and analyse conversation on the web about their brand or about topics of interest.

According to the honeycomb framework, social media services focus on some or all of seven functional building blocks. These building blocks help explain the engagement needs of the social media audience. For instance, LinkedIn users are thought to care mostly about identity, reputation, and relationships, whereas YouTube's primary features are sharing, conversations, groups, and reputation. Many companies build their own social containers that attempt to link the seven functional building blocks around their brands such as Google+, Facebook, and Twitter. With these tools, there is a Privacy section to be amended. This would help users protect their personal information that they do not wish public followers to see.

With all the benefits that associated with social media, it also has drawbacks for internet users. Criticisms of social media range from criticisms of the ease of use of specific platforms and their capabilities, disparity of information available, issues with trustworthiness and reliability of information presented, the impact of social media use on an individual's concentration, ownership of media content, and the meaning of interactions created by social media. However, it is believed that these concerns are being eliminated gradually to make social media be the most effective and successful marketing tool for business.

Social media is the interaction among people in which they create, share or exchange information and ideas in virtual communities and networks. Andreas Kaplan and Michael Haenlein define social media as "a group of Internet-based applications that build on the ideological and technological foundations of Web 2.0, and that allow the creation and exchange of user-generated content."

When it comes to the century that Internet has become so vital, social media is one of the crucial tools for PR and Marketing nowadays.


Social media is considered as the quickest way to attract audience’s awareness and also the shortest way to introduce a particular product to target customers. It was argued that every single business from small to big size needs Social Media to promote and advertise for their products. It is hard to refuse the benefits that Social Media brings to the businesses. Based on what Piskorski (2014) wrote in their book “Networked-The new social operating system”, social media has many positive effects and also do other internet based social networks. Social media is used to document memories, advertise oneself and form friendship. In addition, Piskorski also discussed that by using social media, everyone has the possibility to become content creator from which network individuals opportunities is created to reach wider audience.
