It's likely your Facebook News Feed contains some combination of these, if not all of them (and likely other categories, too). That's both the beauty and the curse of News Feed: It provides updates from all aspects of your life in one place, including those you may not care to see.

Mashable sat down with Greg Marra, Facebook's product manager for News Feed, to discuss how users can best curate the content that they see in News Feed. The easiest way to change what you see? Engage with content, says Marra.

"The basic interactions of News Feed are some of the most important signals that we get," he explains. "Unfortunately, those interactions aren't able to capture everything that we want to know, so we also give people additional controls to tell us things we can't figure out just from normal usage of News Feed."

Here's what we learned.
- If You Want to Stop Seeing Posts From a Facebook Friend...
- If You Want to See More Posts From a Facebook Friend...
- Create Additional, Personalized News Feed Lists
- You Can't Eliminate Ads, But You Can Give Feedback
- Take Facebook's Survey

The moral of the story: With the exception of Facebook ads, you should be able to eliminate anything (or anyone) you don't like from your Facebook News Feed. It requires you to put in a little effort, but hey, these digital newspapers aren't going to write themselves..."

Facebook poaches an NYU machine learning star to start a new AI lab that may very well end up knowing more about your social life than you do.

Facebook users upload 350 million photos onto the social network every day, far beyond the ability of human beings to comprehensively look at, much less analyze. And so that’s one big reason the company just hired NYU machine learning expert Yann LeCun as director of Facebook’s new AI laboratory, an eminent practitioner of an artificial intelligence (AI) technique known as “deep learning.”

“Yann LeCun's move will be an exciting step both for machine learning and for Facebook, which has a lot of unique social data,” says Andrew Ng, who directs the Stanford Artifical Intelligence Laboratory and who led a deep-learning project to analyze YouTube video for Google. “Machine learning is already used in hundreds of places throughout Facebook, ranging from photo tagging to ranking articles to your newsfeed. Better machine learning will be able to help improve all of these features, as well as help Facebook create new applications that none of us have dreamed of yet.”

The Best Way to Use Social Media


Most industries are becoming increasingly saturated, and unwelcome, heavy competition is making it more difficult to attract new clients. Even publicizing your business on social media is not enough, because your competition is going to be doing the same.

 

The key is to actively engage with your audience and not just send an occasional post every now and then. This means establishing yourself as an authoritative figure in your industry and responding to inquiries.

 

You should also start group discussions or video teleseminars and encourage your audience to participate.

 

By being consistent and making it known that you are an industry leader in your niche, you will begin to build credibility and trust.

Keep in mind that even though most of your followers will be more than happy to participate in an online discussion, any direct sales effort will likely be ignored. This is where telesales come into play.
