Using Twitter, Virginia Tech's College Newspaper Kept On Publishing

Using Twitter, Virginia Tech's College Newspaper Kept On Publishing | Social Media and Organizational Communication | Scoop.it
The Collegiate Times went to 20,000 followers from 2,000 as it sent out updates every few minutes to a campus locked down with a gunman believed to be on the loose.

Even as The Collegiate Times’ website crashed, their Twitter account remained active with a consistent update on the current event taking place. Updates on the shooting, which left a police officer dead, was reported and the paper’s Twitter following increased by more than a few thousand. This reaction is an example of how important social networking is in today’s society and vital it is to interact via social media. The Collegiate Times was able to correspond with reporters and shared what information they had to help during this horrific crisis. I think that this is a prime example of how social media can positively enhance your life, especially if your life depends on it!

Classroom Lectures Go Digital with Video-On-Demand

Classroom Lectures Go Digital with Video-On-Demand | Social Media and Organizational Communication | Scoop.it
Thanks to digital media like video-on-demand broadcasts, lectures that students would normally receive in the classroom are migrating outside of brick and mortar schools.

Digital media such as video-on-demand broadcasts, or VODcasts have created a platform for lectures that students would normally have to attend a on campus course for to be viewed digitally. The global company TED that specializes in online inspirational talks has dev eloped a website with education videos, TED-Ed. The head of TED, Chris Anderson, thinks that TED-Ed is a better fit for education in the 21st century. TED was developed for teachers to empower them and the power they have to produce lesson plans on video.

Does this help the already problematic social structure that has reshaped the way we communicate? Or does it only create a bigger issue within our youth?

General Mills Adds Social Media to Product Pitch

General Mills Adds Social Media to Product Pitch | Social Media and Organizational Communication | Scoop.it
General Mills is turning to social media like Pinterest to help introduce a new product it calls Fiber One Chewy bars.

In the beginning, when stay at home moms listened to the radio while cleaning up the house, it was easy to market your products to a specific audience. General Mills is now turning to social media to help market their new products. Websites like Pinterest are being used to reach consumers whose media consumption habits have changed. Just like anything else, today’s society is driven by social media interaction. Turning to new ways and strategies that help reach this new target audience means that social media aspects are indicative of how marketing must change in order to consistently grow. I think that this is a very effective way to stay apart of the conversation.

Analyzing Tweets To Identify Psychopaths - Slashdot

Analyzing Tweets To Identify Psychopaths - Slashdot | Social Media and Organizational Communication | Scoop.it

nonprofiteer writes "Researchers presenting at Defcon next week have developed a psychopathy prediction model for Twitter. It analyzes linguistic tells to rate users' levels of narcissism, machiavellianism and other similarities."

Defcon researchers are working with Twitter to help identify psychopaths and their interactions on Twitter and possibly other social media sites alike. The researchers have developed a psychopath prediction model for Twitter. It reviews the user’s characteristics by analyzing what they are tweeting about, the rate at which they tweet, and comparing that as well as other factors to that of Patrick Bateman. The FBI and psychologists can use this to stop violence and begin to understand how a psychopath thinks. This is very much needed in today’s society with the growth of social media interaction. I believe that this can also help stop predators who seek out children which could also be linked to the reality show “To catch a predator.”

Twitter Appeals to Protect Protester's Tweets

Twitter Appeals to Protect Protester's Tweets | Social Media and Organizational Communication | Scoop.it
Twitter has appealed a federal court order requiring it to turn over a Twitter user's posts to prosecutors in New York in connection with an Occupy Wall Street protest last year.

Last year during the “Occupy Wall Street” protest, a Twitter user posted tweets that were related to the events that took place during OWS. It is said that “the case stands to shape how the law interprets what a social media post is and whether the user has a right to privacy over it” (Somini Sengupta, blogger for the New York Times). Giving Twitter the right to share thoughts on your behalf is simply tweeting whatever you feel like discussing. It should be understood that nothing on the internet is private and any incriminating information found can be detrimental to any protest you may have. Long story short, please watch what you post on the internet!

Social Lip Service vs. Social Customer Service: AT&T Wireless Case Study | Social Media Today | Social Media and Organizational Communication | Scoop.it

While many companies say that they have integrated their brand with social media, the big question is “are they providing social lip service or social customer service” (socialmediatoday.com)? Knowing the difference between social lip service and social customer service is the key in determining how social an organization is. Quickly responding to a tweet from a customer that directs them back to your company’s customer service department, either via their webpage or customer service contact phone number, is social lip service. A way to efficiently answer any inquiries about services provided by your company but does not successfully help them at all. Really connecting with the customer and determining a real live solution to the issue being discussed is how social customer service effectively and successfully works.

Boutique Tweets Joke About Colorado Shooting

Boutique Tweets Joke About Colorado Shooting | Social Media and Organizational Communication | Scoop.it

During a premiere showing of the highly anticipated film, Dark Knight Rises, 12 people were killed by suspected gunman James Holmes in Aurora, Colorado. This quickly became a viral topic among blogs, social media sites, and news programs. #Aurora became the most trending topic on Twitter and generated a lot of sympathetic tweets regarding the tragic deaths. CelebBoutique.com, which is an online retailer based in the United Kingdom, didn’t complete a full research regarding the reason Aurora was now the trending topic before joining the conversation. The company was under the impression that the mention of #Aurora was linked to their white pleated v-neck dress. After tweeting “#Aurora is trending, clearly about our Kim K inspired #Aurora dress ;) Shop: celebboutique.com/aurora-white-pleated-v-neck-strong-shoulder-dress-en.html …,” they quickly found out that there wasn’t any connection between the meaning of the mention and their store. In my opinion, this is the very reason why companies should designate a team specifically for following the traffic of their brand online and validating their information. This is major crisis regarding the company and their public opinion. I hope that their PR team can recover.

Advertisers Urged to Use More Black Media

Advertisers Urged to Use More Black Media | Social Media and Organizational Communication | Scoop.it
The campaign will begin with print advertisements in major newspapers and trade magazines and will expand to include social media and direct outreach to marketers.

Advertisers are urged to cater to the African American audience. African American media outlets believe that advertisers have shunned black media and something has to be done. BET Networks, the National Association of Black Owned Broadcasters, and other media agencies was to introduce a campaign that is intended to help educate advertisers on the vital significance of black media. Social media and print media will aid in the introduction of this effort. With many outlets catering to Spanish-language television and radio to support the Hispanic population, black media wants to establish a platform that caters to their audience in a positive way. I think that this is a great effort and I am looking forward to following up on this and seeing where this leads the black community.

AARP Campaign Tries to Persuade Advertisers

AARP Campaign Tries to Persuade Advertisers | Social Media and Organizational Communication | Scoop.it
A pointed campaign urges advertisers, marketers and media planners to break their traditional focus on young consumers.

AARP is forcing advertisers to focus on who they are targeting their message to. People between the ages of 18 and 34 are targeted and catered to. With headlines like “I may be creased, but my money is crisp” and “I may be gray, but my money is as green as it gets,” AARP is hoping to reach the 68 percent of people that can make a difference to their publication and brand. It is unfair to think that consumers over 50 aren’t physically active and outgoing. “What we’re trying to say to marketers is put your money where the money is, and to break the old paradigm of targeting youth” (Andrew Adam Newman, blogger for the New York Times).

When Reporters Become Targets, War Coverage Is Reduced to a Stream of Videos

When Reporters Become Targets, War Coverage Is Reduced to a Stream of Videos | Social Media and Organizational Communication | Scoop.it
The recent deaths of Western journalists working inside Syria has left a void in coverage; material still makes it out via YouTube, but without context from a reporter on the ground.

The death of American-born correspondent for The Sunday Times, Marie Colvin, made it clear that Syria is perhaps the most dangerous place to be a reporter. While covering the conflict in Syria, other Journalists had been seriously injured and have been struggling to seek freedom from Syria abduction. With YouTube as a facilitator for informing the public about the deaths of our “fallen,” there are a few things that YouTube cannot do. Knowing where to be is far more complicated, and when governments are willing to turn their guns on innocents, there is no safe place to stand (David Carr, blogger for the New York Times). The only thing left to do is stream videos of war coverage.

YouTube Offers a Way to Blur Faces, Protecting Identities in Videos

YouTube Offers a Way to Blur Faces, Protecting Identities in Videos | Social Media and Organizational Communication | Scoop.it
YouTube is offering a tool to blur faces, aimed at helping to protect political activists.

YouTube has made a new tool available that allows people to hide their identity while uploading videos to tell their stories of injustices in their countries and in other countries around the world. With repressive government regimes, human rights activists and groups have decided to create videos of protests and other human rights related conduct to get the message out to the masses. Hopefully this level of confidentiality will get more people to speak out when in other instances they otherwise may not, stated Amanda Conway, a YouTube policy associate. This should be a great addition to the many different ways social media can help end injustices all across the world and link the gaps and holes that divide us all.

Social media: Meaningful or madness?

Social media: Meaningful or madness? | Social Media and Organizational Communication | Scoop.it
A radio news broadcast recently reported that we are using up natural resources at a pace that exceeds our planet’s largesse by half. If we continue, by 2050 we will require three planets to cover the deficit.

During a time when social issues require deep and critical thinking and reading, the masses are consumed with summing up thoughts and current news reports in 140 characters. Few people are paying attention to the problems and needs of their community and country overall. Why has the attention span decreased in length with the increase and growth of technology? Even though I appreciate the advancement of technology and how it has helped this world in many ways, I have to ask...have we become overwhelmed with short, quick, and instant messages that leave out all of the relevant details?

BOSTON (AP) — The mayor of Boston is vowing to block Chick-fil-A from opening a restaurant in the city after the company's president spoke out publicly against gay marriage.

Dan Cathy, President of fast food chain Chick-fil-A, has just created a public crisis among the gay community. During an interview with the Baptist Press, Cathy mentioned that he supports the biblical definition of the family. The mayor of Boston, Thomas Menino, told the Boston Herald (http://bit.ly/OevB9z) that he is against supporting the opening of a business “that discriminates against a population.” It is often said that among businesses and the public, personal opinions should stay just that, personal. In response to the anti-gay statement that was made, the company said that it strives to “treat every person with honor, dignity, and respect.” This could be very detrimental to the growth of Chick-fil-A.
