"Going “viral”—what does that mean exactly? The definition, according to Google, states that viral is “an image, video, advertisement, etc. that is circulated rapidly on the Internet.” It’s amazing to think that content could be so compelling—that people all over the world could recognize a name, a video or a tune that has been organically shared with friends, family and followers across the internet.

What makes these campaigns so compelling is that they are passed around organically and get millions upon millions of views. There’s something that sparks interest in the viewer—some aspect of the image, video or ad which connects with this person on a deeper level—whether it may be a reminder of an aspect of the viewer’s childhood or simply portraying a strong emotion. Viral campaigns seem to capture viewers’ eyes and ears with full-fledged engagement....."

This month’s issue of Harper’s Bazaar magazine has an augmented reality feature in which you use a smartphone to ‘bring the cover to life’. It’s far from the first magazine to do it, and it’s hard to miss adverts on the tube or at bus stops that have some variation of ’scan this advert to see something cool’. I’ve never actually seen anyone do this, but in the spirit of inquiry I decided to test exactly how long it would take to make this happen.
