The tragic truth about hunger, food insecurity and poverty in America.

June 29, 2013 Moyers and Company -Kristi Jacobson and Mariana Chilton explain to Bill how hunger and food insecurity hit people from every walk of life.

HUNGER AND OBESITY ARE BOTH SIDES OF THE SAME COIN

Here in the richest country on earth, 50 million of us — one in six Americans — go hungry. More than a third of them are children. And yet Congress can’t pass a Farm Bill because our representatives continue to fight over how many billions to slash from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, better known as food stamps. The debate is filled with tired clichés about freeloaders undeserving of government help, living large at the expense of honest, hardworking taxpayers. But a new documentary, A Place at the Table, paints a truer picture of America’s poor.... http://billmoyers.com/segment/kristi-jacobson-and-mariana-chilton-on-how-hunger-hurts-everyone/

7 Practices to Cultivate Compassion, by Leo Babauta | Catholic Social Teachings & Sustainability | Scoop.it
Scientific studies suggest that there are physical benefits to practicing compassion -- people who practice it produce 100 percent more DHEA, which is a hormone that counteracts the aging process, and 23 percent less cortisol -- the stress hormone.
Laura Graham Fetters's insight:

Perhaps, as some say,  we cannot "teach" compassion, but we can cultivate compassion and model it throughout the day.

Think you’ll never have to ask for help? Here’s your chance to prove it.
Laura Graham Fetters's insight:

This is a interesting interactive game that I have had my students do in pairs (families) in front of the class. They make their life choices as the game moves along, and they have to explain why they make certain decisions about money/spending. What often occurs is a family goes bankrupt even though they thought they were making logical choices. Terrific exercise in compassion for those who need government assistance.
