What teachers need and reformers ignore: time to collaborate

What teachers need and reformers ignore: time to collaborate | Social Investment Program” | Scoop.it
Darling-Hammond: The reform impulse that gave rise to construction of new learning standards and assessments will only work if we invest in the capacity of educators to work together effectively.

"If we want to see similar gains in education, we must structure for success by understanding that effective collaboration in schools doesn’t occur by happenstance—it requires purposeful action."

Could Good Type Design Promote Literacy In The Middle East? | Social Investment Program” | Scoop.it

Public perception of typography may be that it’s an insular details game, a culture of obsessive nuance. That couldn’t be further from the truth forNadine Chahine, a young Lebanese type designer who believes that type holds the key to literacy--and by extension, education--in the Arab world.

Social Search & the future of SEO

Social Search & the future of SEO | Social Investment Program” | Scoop.it

How does social fit into the worlds of SEO and search? Bing's Duane Forrester and Catalysts' Dan Cristo highlighted the major changes in the industry at SES NY.

Metadata, title tags, etc. were once the gold standard of SEO, but now they’re the base line. The reality: If there is a big collection of people talking about a person, search engines are drawn to the person or site to try and understand what all the fuss is about. Unfortunately, the technology to truly hone in on these conversations and chatter remains in infancy.

Actually Brian, Matt Cutts recently stated in a video on Youtube that Google does takes social signals into heavy consideration when evaluating the worth of our content. In fact he stated they always have. I just watched the video about 3 weeks ago. In another video Matt Cutts even stated they are more concerned with identifying what people like or dislike, which is why they created the +1 button. When you +1 something on the web, you are recommending it to anyone in your Google+ circles, both on G+ and organic search. And, the +1 button also helps Google to gage the overall importance of an author and content online. Many links themselves are also coming from social networks, and all links on Google+ are "dofollow". Dont believe me? Go to your webmaster tools account check the links pointing to your site, Google+ links are weighted like any others. Also, they are crawled by Bing as well, and Bing does count backlinks from G+. So your assertions I'm afraid are not accurate.

This is something that we have been preaching for the last few years! Social media is becoming more and more important to the search engines every day. And now this is straight from the horse's mouth.

Seth Dixon's curator insight, December 20, 2012 9:10 AM

The National Geographic Education Foundation works to assist teachers to promote the status and quality of geography education.  In keeping with that mission they have recently revamped their AP Human Geography page, dividing all their resources according to the 7 major units of the course (in the "tags" section below, I have attempted to do the same):

  1. Geography: Its Nature and Perspectives
  2. Population
  3. Cultural Patterns and Processes
  4. Political Organization of Space
  5. Agriculture and Rural Land Use
  6. Industrialization and Economic Development
  7. Cities and Urban Land Use
