Gender neutral bathrooms now in several schools

Gender neutral bathrooms now in several schools | Social Care | Scoop.it
Long before the president sent out his directive regarding transgender students some schools were already ahead of the curve. Norwich Free Academy has had gender neutral bathrooms on its campus since last fall after a student and parent brought their concerns to the school. "The student wanted to know if there was access for bathrooms that would allow him or her to have privacy and also comfort level and we thought that was appropriate," says Ross Sward, the principal of Tirrell House at Norwich Free Academy. He says that transgender student didn't feel comfortable going into either the women's or men's room so the school took that into consideration. "We're about providing a positive experience for students when they come to campus and so it's just part of our new reality for us and we embrace it and we're open to discussions about that topic," says Sword. Along with NFA, there are gender neutral bathrooms at East Lyme High School and schools in Lyme and Old Lyme. Other area schools are also considering them. There are now four gender neutral bathrooms at NFA, including one in Tirrell House. That one has two stalls and a lock for privacy
