SNP MPs in bid to prevent fracking under homes | Scottish National Party

SNP MPs in bid to prevent fracking under homes | Scottish National Party | SNP Perth River Tay | Scoop.it
Speaking ahead of Monday’s Infrastructure Bill debate in the House of Commons - in which SNP MPs will seek to block UK Government plans to allow fracking companies to drill under land without the consent of the owners - SNP Energy Spokesperson Mike Weir MP said:

“We are committed to opposing the clauses in the Infrastructure Bill which would introduce a right for those companies involved in fracking to carry out operations under properties without the permission of the landowner. We consider this to be unacceptable and removes property holders rights to hold to object to such operations, limited though they may be at present.”

RURAL SCOTLAND AND INDEPENDENCE.

RURAL SCOTLAND AND INDEPENDENCE. | SNP Perth River Tay | Scoop.it
It wasn’t all that long ago. They were the ‘SNP heartlands’ and we seemed unassailable. When I was first elected in 2001 the SNP at Westminster held 5 seats and all of them were from rural Scotland. From Kinross to Kinloss it was the North East shoulder of Scotland that returned SNP MPs and it was rural Scotland that sustained our Parliamentary footprint. In the nascent Scottish Parliament it was no different. In 1999 we won 7 constituency seats, all rural, the 6 constituencies we won in 97’s General election with the addition of Inverness. In fact if we were to look historically at where the SNP had won all their Westminster seats at General elections prior to the 2015 breakthrough, other than Dundee, they were all mainly rural.

THE OPTIMUM CONDITIONS FOR INDYREF SUCCESS

THE OPTIMUM CONDITIONS FOR INDYREF SUCCESS | SNP Perth River Tay | Scoop.it
It now looks like a second referendum is set to dominate our Depute Leadership contest and I believe that is a good thing. We are at a critical juncture in how we proceed with a second referendum and it is something that we simply have to get right. The debate seems to centre round whether we should proceed with a referendum simply because we currently posses a mandate or whether we hold one when there is good evidence it can be won.

WE MUST CONDUCT OUR DEBATE WITH RESPECT

WE MUST CONDUCT OUR DEBATE WITH RESPECT | SNP Perth River Tay | Scoop.it
Well that’s been quite a couple of days…. In the last few days I’ve been called a ‘poster boy’ for the ultra unionist group Scotland in Union, I’ve had my commitment to Scottish independence questioned, my ‘lifestyle’ has been disapproved of, I’m apparently ‘settling down’ in Westminster and I’ve even been called an ‘Etonian boot licker’. None of this came from political opponents – all of this is from people who claim to support Scottish independence on Twitter.

THE SNP MP who launched a high-profile campaign against the UK Government’s controversial rape clause and two child family benefit cap has given her support to a senior activist in the party’s depute leader race.

In a boost for Julie Hepburn, Alison Thewliss, the MP for Glasgow Central, announced she was backing the former political education convener to succeed Angus Robertson.

“I’ve nominated @juliehepburnsnp for @theSNP Depute Leader. She has very clear ideas for how we can work with members to improve, organise and build as a party, and has a great deal of experience behind the scenes. #JulieForDepute,” she tweeted.

THE UK SUPERSTATE | SNP Perth River Tay | Scoop.it
One of the greatest political inventions of recent times has been that of the ‘UK single market’. This bizarre political invention has conveniently emerged just as we are leaving the European Union and is intended to suggest that we in the UK have some sort arrangement that is of an equivalence to the European Union single market.

Picking the best

Picking the best | SNP Perth River Tay | Scoop.it
Over the coming weeks we will see countless articles telling us what the SNP Depute Leader must be. The role will be defined and redefined ad nauseam. The duties and responsibilities of the Depute Leader shall, if we accept all we’re told, expand to include functions which are inappropriate, mutually incompatible  organisationally impractical and, perhaps, physically impossible.

LET’s SPEND BILLIONS OF POUNDS REDECORATING A PARLIAMENTARIAN’s PALACE

LET’s SPEND BILLIONS OF POUNDS REDECORATING A PARLIAMENTARIAN’s PALACE | SNP Perth River Tay | Scoop.it
Of all the things this House can do to endear itself to our constituents, spending billions of pounds on renovating our place of work is not one of them. In these days of austerity and tightening of belts, and with the impending economic disaster of Brexit coming our way, I would bet this would be near the bottom or at the very bottom of the public’s concerns. The sums involved are simply eye-watering—£3.6 billion rising to £5.7 billion, and that is before all the unforeseen difficulties and the additions that hon. Members will certainly want to factor in. So it is no surprise whatsoever that people are making an estimation that this could come in at a cool £10 billion to £12 billion.

ALMOST 21 years after it returned to Scotland, the Stone of Destiny may be set for another move within a few years.

Currently residing in Edinburgh Castle, the Stone – accepted by most people as the original but seen by others as a fake – is being touted as ideal for the revamped Perth City Hall or Perth Museum and Art Gallery. The proposed location is just a few miles south of Scone, where the Stone lay for centuries.

FEDERALISM

FEDERALISM | SNP Perth River Tay | Scoop.it
Jeremy Corbyn’s been back in Scotland and that can only mean a renewed debate about federalism in the UK. Where there’s been talk of a new Act of Union and maximum devolution it is federalism that can always be relied upon to be brought out when something needs said about Scotland and the UK’s constitutional future. Only ever referred to in the vaguest of possible terms very few people actually seem to know what Labour mean when they use the F word.

“Getting on with the day job” is a phrase widely bandied about Scottish politics.

It’s a jibe thrown around by opponents who, all too often, use it as a smokescreen to hide their lack of anything to say beyond their own constitutional obsessions.

Well I’m more than happy to outline how the SNP Government has been getting on with the day job.

Just for once we have a by-election outcome where the terminology of 'hold' or 'gain' isn't misleading due to the quirks of the voting system.  The Highland ward in Perth & Kinross was firmly Tory territory in the council elections last May, and the vacant seat was successfully retained by the Tories in the by-election yesterday.

Young's Seafood

Update on Pinney's seafood processing plant.

After a meeting with Young's Seafood, Business Minister Paul Wheelhouse said:

“Following on from the very disappointing news that emerged from Young’s Seafood, regarding their Pinney’s seafood processing plant in Annan, I have had a constructive discussions with both the management at Young’s and the leadership of Dumfries and Galloway Council.

“I confirmed that the Scottish Government, our agencies and other local stakeholders are all committed to working in partnership with Young’s to explore any potential options to retain production at the site and safeguard as many jobs as possible. We seek to leave no stone unturned in our efforts to retain employment, given the importance of the plant to the economic wellbeing of the community.

“Young’s have provided a detailed insight into those factors underlying the proposal to potentially close the site, and signalled their agreement to work with us, throughout and beyond the forthcoming consultation period with their staff, to explore all viable options, including the prospect of identifying new market opportunities and the potential reconfiguration of the site, to sustain production levels in Annan.

“While this will clearly be a very worrying time for Young’s employees, their families and the wider community, I want to assure all those who are affected by this that we are committed to doing everything we can to find a viable solution.  Furthermore, we will convene a meeting later this week with our partners at Dumfries and Galloway Council and other partner enterprise and skills agencies to map out the next steps in our efforts to try to save jobs at Pinney’s and to ensure we work together, as a team, in the best interests of the people of Annan.”

PRAGMATISM MUST UNDERPIN OUR APPROACH TO A 2nd REFERENDUM

PRAGMATISM MUST UNDERPIN OUR APPROACH TO A 2nd REFERENDUM | SNP Perth River Tay | Scoop.it
There is only one thing that determines my approach to a second independence referendum and that is winning it. Losing again is simply unthinkable and we have to ensure that we are as pragmatic as possible in ensuring that next time we get over the line. That means we have to have a new case that is sufficiently persuasive to convince those amongst our fellow Scots who voted No last time and we must ensure that it is held under the optimum conditions for success.

THE DEPUTE LEADERSHIP OF THE SNP

THE DEPUTE LEADERSHIP OF THE SNP | SNP Perth River Tay | Scoop.it
I said when I was considering standing for the Depute Leadership of the SNP that I would take soundings from colleagues within the party and across the membership before making up my mind to have my name put forward. After listening very carefully to the response to my agenda I have decided that I do not believe that I have sufficient support within the party and I will not now be standing for the post of Depute Leader of the Scottish National Party. Making Scotland a better place to live and work and securing independence for my nation are the issues that determine my approach to politics and I will continue to offer everything I can to ensure that agenda is progressed.

My agenda was essentially based around five main items. First, to design a new independence offering that takes into account the political environment that Scotland now inhabits, and is sufficiently persuasive to convince our fellow Scots who have so far been unconvinced in the case for independence. Second, to try and find a way that unites Yes voters who voted either to remain or leave in the EU referendum. In that, I proposed a graduated approach for an independent Scotland to rejoin the EU with checks and breaks factored in and put under democratic control. Third, was to make a proper, honest assessment of why we lost 21 MPs last year and design a political response that takes stock of the new challenges we face. Fourth, to get the party organisationally equipped to face future contests as a mass membership party. Lastly I proposed that the party has to be pragmatic in its approach to the timing of a further independence referendum. I firmly believe that a referendum should take place at the optimum time for success taking into account external features such as the increasing concerns around Brexit, and to proceed only when we have sufficient evidence that it could be won.

There are certain issues I could have perhaps ducked or de-emphasised in order to better assist me in any Depute Leader contest, but anyone who knows me knows that this is not something I would be prepared to do. I will always speak out on what I believe is in the best interests of my country.

This contest offers a wide ranging debate within the party where all issues that motivate and inspire us should be discussed honestly in the best traditions of the comradeship we enjoy in the SNP. I hope that others may be able to take up this agenda and perhaps present it more convincingly than I could and I will be asking candidates who do come forward their views on these issues.

I look forward to this contest with real interest and wish all those who feel they have the abilities to lead, all the best.

SCOTTISH TORY MPs ARE NOT JUST FOR CHRISTMAS… | SNP Perth River Tay | Scoop.it
It’s now over six months since we’ve had Scottish Conservative MPs as a feature of the House of Commons. You’ll remember how they were going to be a distinctive voice for Scotland always putting the Scottish interest first. They were ‘Ruth’s’ Tories prepared to bravely defy their Westminster whips if it was in Scotland’s interest. Maybe it would then be an opportunity to check in and ask how these most curious and enigmatic of Scottish political creatures have got on with this selfless political task?

ME AND JEREMY CORBYN

I remember the good old days when a small group of MPs were the front line in Parliamentary opposition to Blairite Labour. There were the 6 SNP MPs, 3 Plaid, Jeremy Corbyn, John McDonnell, latterly Caroline Lucas and the rest of the small band of Labour Campaign Group MPs. Where we never operated as a group we were a sort of a nascent, embryonic ‘progressive alliance’ that conjured up the possibilities of securing a progressive agenda across the UK

Parliament returns this week and there will be only one show in town and that is the on going agony over Brexit. On Thursday we will start the first of two days on the Repeal Bill as we continue to progress this bizarre and disastrous endeavour. The repeal bill is a mess and it is impossible to think of a more crude and dysfunctional instrument to unpack the thousands of EU laws that define our legislative relationship with Europe. The Government have even come up with the imaginative solution of ‘Henry the 8th Powers’ simply giving itself legislative authority over large swathes of laws untroubled by democratic oversight. It allows the blueprint for an assault on Scotland’s devolution arrangements and says nothing about returning EU powers to Scotland. I think it’s fair to say I will not be voting for it in a month of Sundays.
