The Farmers Almanac Winter Weather Outlook for 2014 - 2015 dropped just a few days ago and it's time to start planning your winter powder retreats. El Nino 2014 is coming.
Nathan Schimmoller's insight:

According to the always reliable Farmers Almanac, the 2014-2015 Winter Season is  shaping up to be a good one for most of the big destinations in the United States with the Rocky Mountains getting large amounts of snow and the northeast getting above average amounts of its normal wintery mix.

Let the skiing begin!

Let the skiing begin! | Snowboard | Scoop.it
The first snow of the season signals the beginning of the ski season in New England. Killington opened this past Monday to limited skiing with one inch of new snow and a lot of man-made crystals on a few slopes.
Nathan Schimmoller's insight:

Being an east coaster far away from the mountains in Vermont and New Hampshire this article gives me an itching for a long weekend road trip!

World Snow Awards 2014

Nathan Schimmoller's insight:

Coming from the east coast of the United States where Elk Mountain is the best mountain within driving distance. This article gave me a great appreciation of the growth in the ski and snowboarding communities over this past year, even when I can't make it to the bigger ski resorts this year. Definitely gave me a couple of locations for my to visit list!

Video: Skiing through this impossibly narrow ridge is insane | Snowboard | Scoop.it
Holy cow. I don't know how professional skier Cody Townsend pulled off this insane ski line that saw him pretty much drop straight down and then through the most narrow of cracks while skiing insanely fast but he did it.
Nathan Schimmoller's insight:

Amazing video from our two boarded brethren. Gets me excited to finish school, and hit the mountains over winter break!

Vail to invest $50M, connect 2 Utah ski resorts - U.S. News & World Report

Vail to invest $50M, connect 2 Utah ski resorts - U.S. News & World Report | Snowboard | Scoop.it
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A new high-speed gondola is set to be built this summer to connect two Utah ski resorts and create one of the largest ski areas in the country, Vail Resorts Inc. announced Monday.
Nathan Schimmoller's insight:

Aspen and Breckenridge, CO have traditionally been the United State largest destination for advanced skiers in search for large mountains in one area, however, with Vail's recent purchase of Park City Ski Resort in Utah this could be changing. Vail, one of the largest snow mountain resort companies in the United States bought the Olympic ski resort, Park City, this past September. Now they are planning on connecting this mountain with their Canyon Mountain Resort via high speed gondolas.

With these two large mountains connecting and Snowbird in the immediate vicinity of these mountains as well, it looks like Salt Lake City, Utah could offer more to travelers in way of accessibility via air as it is closer to a major city, than Aspen is to Denver.

Leslie Wot - An amateur in a professionals world

Nathan Schimmoller's insight:

The skiing and snowboarding community is very dedicated to these winter sports, but unless you live in or near one of these hubs of winter activity, it can be hard to get a true appreciation of the culture, much like trying to understand surfing and its culture while living in the great plains of the United States. Leslie does a great job of explaining the mountain resort life, especially for those vacationing there.
