McAfee on - Holiday Tech Gifts – Tips To Play Them Safely

McAfee on - Holiday Tech Gifts – Tips To Play Them Safely | Smart Protect - Digital Protection | Scoop.it

Here is another great post from McAfee's blogs about staying safe when shopping for or setting up holiday tech gifts. Tracy Mooney, McAfee's advocate for Family Cyber-Security let's us know with a great graphic about keeping security and protection in mind.

It is quite a dilemma when children receive gifts from Grandparents and relatives to allow them to play with their new toys or taking the time to set them up so that they are as secure as possible.

Don't forget, these tech gifts, especially the mobile ones are very capable at allowing communication on nearly any channel and we all need to be aware that they are THE latest threat-vector to emerge and that we must be even more careful with them than our house-bound PC's and Macs.

Online shopping made safe and convenient

Online shopping made safe and convenient | Smart Protect - Digital Protection | Scoop.it

An excellent (although very long) article about how to stay safe when shopping online this holiday season. It never ceases to amaze me to what lengths criminals and criminal organizations will go to in order to separate us from our money.

You have to keep up with so many security aspects that it is a welcome relief to be able to have high quality tools and security suites to protect us on the technical side of security. The human side of security though needs a constant feed of information.

In developed countries, bank cards are very popular. Consumers don’t have to lug around wads of cash when they can opt for a slim piece of plastic that replaces a heavy purse or wallet.

How consumers will use their mobile devices during the holidays - Mobile Commerce Daily - Research

How consumers will use their mobile devices during the holidays - Mobile Commerce Daily - Research | Smart Protect - Digital Protection | Scoop.it

The BlackFriday and Cyber Monday 2011 shopping days marked a massive change in how we shopped. While many of us went to physical stores to pickout our latest clothes, gadgets and other goodies, a massive 52% of used a mobile device to shop with. This means that over half of us used a smartphone or tablet to research or buy something. This could have been over the Internet or via an app.

This statistic gets even more interesting when you understand that 67% of all consumers are planning to use a mobile to make a purchase over this holiday season. What does this mean for all of us though? We have to significantly increase our understanding of the threats and risks involved when dealing with our mobile devices, shopping and payments and security.

This article from Mobile Commerce Daily goes through many more statistics about how we use our mobile devices. Take care though of the security. Be sure to treat your smartphone or tablet the same way as you would treat the security of your PC, which hopefully is to use the inbuilt security that it has (lock it with a PIN after every use), make sure that you logout of any application you use, clean your cookies and caches regularly, AND most important of all make sure that you install and use Security software with at least these capabilities anti-malware, encryption and tracking/lock-down/erase of all data.

Also, make sure that you take routine backups of all important information.
