Industrial strategy must help all of the UK lift productivity

Industrial strategy must help all of the UK lift productivity | Smarter Sustainable Innovation | Scoop.it

The key aim of today's announement on the Industrial Strategy is to lift the UK’s standing in international league tables of productivity, two of those foundations stand out.  The first is place, meaning the UK’s geographically lopsided economy. The second priority should be skills.

There was an extra £406m for maths and technical education in the budget – but  bigger investment will be required in technical colleges and the retraining of those in work.

Cambium LLP's insight:

Another key foundation of a successful Industrial Strategy will be “invisible infrastructure”, meaning improving the interaction between government and business.

Why We Won’t Make It to 2030 Without Buy-In From Business

Why We Won’t Make It to 2030 Without Buy-In From Business | Smarter Sustainable Innovation | Scoop.it

Towards a Sustainable Economy: The Commercial Imperative for Business to Deliver the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). The SDGs provide  great opportunities for business to lead in a field that is still emerging, provided businesses can:

  • consider the long-term
  • think systemically
  • work with others collaboratively
  • accept that not all of the benefits will accrue to one company, but that the benefits will be shared
Cambium LLP's insight:

How will your business take advantage of the $13trn global innovation market offered by the UN Sustainable Development Goals?  Learn more here.

Stephane Bilodeau's curator insight, November 21, 2017 9:26 PM
In putting together this report, the group concluded that the challenges of business buying into and working towards the SDGs are also the opportunities for business to lead in a field that is still emerging. They discovered that this requires a specific set of four business capabilities:
1- The ability to look at the long-term
2- The ability to think systemically
3- The ability to work with others collaboratively
4- The willingness to accept that not all of the benefits will accrue to one company, but that the benefits will be shared
Vrettos believes that forward-thinking organizations understand the risks and opportunities that come from climate change, resource security, food insecurity, and health issues, but most importantly, they understand that their successes are tied to the success of their local communities. Embracing the findings of this report will give businesses the tools they need to deliver on the SDGs.

Collaboration Alert! Is Your Organisation ready for the New Energy Economy?

Collaboration Alert! Is Your Organisation ready for the New Energy Economy? | Smarter Sustainable Innovation | Scoop.it

A new study reveals most organisations feel prepared for a decentralized, decarbonised and digitized future, gaps remain between intention and action.

This false sense of security is caused by continued use of conventional approaches to energy management and climate action.

These approaches do not address limited coordination between procurement, operations and sustainability departments, impairing efficient data collection and sharing.

Cambium LLP's insight:

Collaboration across and between organisations is an increasingly important enabler of innovation adoption.  How good is your collaboration strategy?

Stephane Bilodeau's curator insight, December 10, 2017 10:48 AM
"There is possibly a broader issue facing the companies and workforce of today. Our mental approach to change, or put another way, how our cognitive thought-processes react to new technologies. Consider this thought: as our attention spans have shortened, and as we zoom along trying to make mental shortcuts (heuristics) to make decisions rapidly, is it possible when it comes to innovation we may naturally be being handicapped due to ‘cognitive biases’, or even a ‘cognitive capacity limit’.
Quite possibly, we may ‘anchor’ to a piece of data we are exposed to while making a decision, regardless of pertinence or just simply doing what we’ve always done because we know no better. We may also ‘frame’, often drawing different conclusions from the same underlying information, depending on how it is presented.
Over the last 50 years, many technological innovations have spread with stunning speed; don’t expect 4IR to be any less dramatic. This may terrify some people, it may also liberate others. There are potentially many amazing benefits, and of course, anybody used to “old fashioned” ways of working might question whether any new-fangled technique with its amazing benefits will outweigh all the effort and cost. Therefore, can a company, and its workers, afford to let the 4th industrial Revolution pass them by."

Initial UK Industrial Strategy focus is on 4 Grand Challenges

Initial UK Industrial Strategy focus is on 4 Grand Challenges | Smarter Sustainable Innovation | Scoop.it

The UK Government published its long awaited Industrial Strategy whitepaper yesterday.  It cited 4 grand challenge areas that it views as being key to reviving productivity growth across the UK economy.  These areas are:

  • artificial intelligence
  • medical care for an ageing population
  • mobility including driverless vehicles
  • clean energy
Cambium LLP's insight:

Of the four grand challenges, AI has the power to transform all the other areas.  Application of AI and machine learning to translate great research and ideas into high impact industrial applications is vital, if the Industrial Strategy is to deliver innovation, productivity growth and high value jobs.

InCEPT is already enabling the use of AI, machine learning and big data to deliver these innovative, high impact applications through a novel approach to collaborative innovation.  Discover more about InCEPT here.

The SDGs, the New Cornerstone of the Sustainability Agenda

The SDGs, the New Cornerstone of the Sustainability Agenda | Smarter Sustainable Innovation | Scoop.it
SDGs are here to stay – They will shape the sustainability agenda for the next 15 years. SDGs are only 2 years old: although somewhat complicated and sometimes confusing – especially for companies - they are rising above other sophisticated standards (GRI, ISO 26000) and they are here to stay. The UN is going to put in a lot of efforts to support them. New guidelines have been released during the conference to help decipher the SDGs and before long everyone will be talking about them. Hence do not have misgivings about the SDGs, you would have no other alternatives but to get into it.
