My sister and neice are fluent in sign language. There is a lyrical dancing beauty watching their hands, body, and face when "speaking". Both of them are hearing but they have a connection to this world of deaf culture that I will never understand. A intriguing world that despite being able to observe I cannot fathom the nuance and will never fully understand. It is definitely a culture. Hearing devices do allow the brain to receive neural impulses that it can interpret into meaning, but these devices do NOT allow the deaf to hear the way you and I understand. Metallic clicks, fuzzy buzzing, the brain can learn what these things mean, but it makes me wonder. How can a deaf person begin to describe to a hearing person what they can now HEAR? How can a blind person explain the color blue? Interesting article.
