Being an iPhone user in Canada, I thought I would test Siri to learn French in iOS 11, but unfortunately, it is not yet able to translate from Canadian English to a second language. However, for the traveler who is at a novice language level and is traveling to a country where she/he doesn't speak the language and just needs to get from point A to point B and would like to bridge the divide in communication, this feature can be useful.

Duolingo as I see it, is the digital form of Collaborative Learning. Language learning with this app makes it achievable for all students of any socio-economic background to develop their listening and speaking skills in French. The app is free and it works through asking translation questions through vocabulary. It then moves to phrases. It speaks only in the target language and uses the image and voice with the target language to develop metacognition of learning a second language. It uses the similar model of CAPTCHA where advanced language users can make corrections thereby making the learning process collaborative.

Narrative Perspectives on Self-Directed Foreign Language Learning in a Computer- and Mobile-Assisted Language Learning Context

Narrative Perspectives on Self-Directed Foreign Language Learning in a Computer- and Mobile-Assisted Language Learning Context | Mobile Phones and Language Learning | Scoop.it
Millions of learners around the world use self-directed computer- and mobile-assisted language learning (CALL, MALL) programs to study foreign languages. One such program, Duolingo, currently attracts over 120 million users and is claimed (by the publisher) to be a highly effective method of language learning. While L2 researchers have shown limited engagement with similar large-scale commercial programs, issues related to learner persistence, motivation, and program efficacy have been reported. This study investigates the experiences and efficacy of learning Turkish on Duolingo for 12 weeks, drawing on a methodological tradition of researcher narratives. Three graduate student researchers kept diaries and completed weekly reflections on their Turkish learning experiences, which served as source material for individual narrative analysis. The resulting narratives were discussed and analyzed collaboratively from an ecological perspective. Strategies used by the researcher-participants were heavily influenced by ecological factors. Persistence in learning was found to be influenced by ecological factors and varied across timescales. Ultimately, the researcher-participants had limited Turkish learning outcomes and felt demotivated to continue studying on Duolingo. Implications for CALL/MALL design include presenting materials in a meaningful context, capitalizing on social affordances, and providing meaningful feedback to learners in order to facilitate learning and goal-setting.

Alejandro Lopez laverde's curator insight, April 28, 12:32 PM
I have analyzed the procedure with CALL/MALL and I must say that to me they do not play a major role compared to motivation and usefulness realization because these strategies do not become the goal, they only act as a mere tool to reach it, and this is what demotivates learners, studying to be able to succeed on an application for language learning is not as enriching as realizing the real use of having good language skills for daily life.

Such amazing tool to take advantage of technology :) Tools like this ones are excellent to enhance the development of  la guage skills while taking advantage of technology. As it not only enables students to use their devices to learn, it also promotes speaking skill. It is a shame that it is only available for iOS.
It would be great if the application could be used in different platforms.

Far more complex couplings between SAMR and Bloom are possible, involving convergent/divergent branchings, oscillations between levels, skipping of some SAMR levels, etc. Nonetheless, the simple structure described above is well suited to beginning practitioners’ needs, and even retains usefulness for more experienced faculty.
