Smart Cities Council | How to Use the Readiness Guide

Smart Cities Council | How to Use the Readiness Guide | Smart Cities & Smart Solutions | Scoop.it
The role of the Readiness Guide is to help you transition to a smart city, at your own pace and on your own terms. This chapter explains the Smart Cities Framework that supports that mission. We think you will find it a useful mechanism to understand the totality of a smart city and how the pieces work together. This chapter gives you what you need to construct a “target list” or “wish list” for your city. When you are ready to turn that list into an actual plan, you’ll find guidance in the, “Ideas to Action” chapter.
Olga Slobodova's insight:
In its Readiness Guide, the Smart Cities Council uses a new non-orthodox non-radial Smart City model, unlike almost all the previous models, like the ones of IBM, Boyd Cohen and The European Smart CIties project led by the Technological University of Vienna.

Olga Slobodova's insight:

The OECD is reasonably wondering if cities are becoming as powerful as countries: population of megapolises equal to that of many countries, their size allows them to be swift and their economy allows them to exert power.

The question is how cities influence education? Is it better to be studying in a city or in the countryside? Both have crying out advantages and disadvantages, but according to the OECD and more specifically PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment), learning outcomes of urban students are higher than that of rural students.

With the rapid urbanisation rate all over the world, we can expect more than 80% of the world’s students having beneficial conditions for their education, such as richer cultural environment, better job prospects, more attractive workplace for teachers, higher concentration of ideas and more encouraging conditions for research and innovation.

Germany had so much renewable energy on Sunday that it had to pay people to use electricity | Smart Cities & Smart Solutions | Scoop.it
On Sunday, May 8, Germany hit a new high in renewable energy generation. Thanks to a sunny and windy day, at one point around 1pm the country's solar, wind, hydro and biomass plants were supplying about 55 GW of the 63 GW being consumed, or 87%. Power prices actually went negative for several hours, meaning commercial customers wer
Olga Slobodova's insight:
It sounds funny that thanks to the renewable energy customers can now earn money for consuming energy, but the problem is that the infrastructure is still too rigid for the new opportunities the renewable energy is offering. It's not possible to quickly stop nuclear and coal plants, so they had to use their resources for nought, and in addition to that pay to sell energy!

The European Commission should make public a study on biofuels it commissioned itself, even if it doesn’t like its results, writes José Inácio Faria.

Olga Slobodova's insight:

The European Commission is hiding the results of the research on the relationship between investments into biofuels and the increase of food prices through indirect land use change, although stakeholders were promised that they would be kept informed.

Supposedly, according to the research, the concerns on indirect land use change are overestimated, which contradicts the formally adopted EU policy.

London to trial latest smart city technologies | Cities Today – Connecting the world’s urban leaders

London to trial latest smart city technologies | Cities Today – Connecting the world’s urban leaders | Smart Cities & Smart Solutions | Scoop.it
Olga Slobodova's insight:

The focus of the project is to create a platform for sharing data between cities. What can data sharing offer to intercity cooperation? It is more than solidarity in the rapidly changing urban landscape.

First of all, this is an opportunity for the implementation of successful solutions to other cities, as well as for the exchange of expertise.

Besides, this is about statistics. Needless to say how many applications it may have for cities: research on road accidents hotspots and their condition, study of the impact and consequences of a particular solution or sort of a friendly rivalry between cities, as well as creation of realistic indexes on urban development achievements and life quality levels.

The European Commission will issue guidelines to member states in early March on how to regulate emerging companies like Uber and Airbnb, which have shaken up the taxi and hotel sector.

Olga Slobodova's insight:

The College of Commissioners does not have a unified point of view on whether to impose new legislation on companies like Uber and Airbnb that are shaking up the markets. But so far, sharing economy won a battle and instead of strict regulations the European Commission is going to issue guidelines on how to apply existing regulations to this new model of economy. Now, isn’t it good news?
