A webpage that shows a lot of social shares appears much more authoritative as compared to a webpage with few social shares. This has been corroborated by research data that shows content activity from social media channels weighs into rankings on search engines. The importance of links as a ranking parameter is less likely to cease as they evolve into a new role that indicates the importance of social media activity as a ranking factor.

Here are 20 social signals that Google tracks to determine ranking based on various social media activities on Google+, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Reddit, Digg, StumbleUpon & Foursquare.  http://goo.gl/wBvVDM

Google's Top SEO Tips for Startups

Google's Top SEO Tips for Startups | SM | Scoop.it

As SEO credibility goes, it doesn't get much better than Google's Developer Programs Tech Lead Maile Ohye. In a 10-minute video, she adopts the role of a consultant to deliver all the advice she'd give to a startup whose website has no more than 50 pages of primary content, and a desire to rank for a handful of keywords.

Here are a few highlights of Ohye's tutorial. If your startup business seeks to quickly rank, consider taking these steps:

Decide if you want visitors to see the www or non-www version of your domain. Major companies like Google and Facebook tend to use the former, but it's up to you.Verify ownership of your site in Webmaster Tools. Also sign up for email forwarding, so Google can alert you to potential problems.Perform a background check on your domain. If spammers previously owned your domain, it won't rank well.Include analytics code. Whether you use Google Analytics or another provider, it's good to start collecting data, even if you're not ready to use it.Use strategy in your site design. You'll get different types of visitors—customers, investors, press. Your site should offer an excellent experience to each persona.Define your conversion. Make a relevant conversion possible on every page; don't force users to make extra clicks.Be smart about your copy. Use keywords in your text that people normally use to find information about your product or service.Check on your ranking. Ideally, you'll rank number one for your company name. But also examine how you rank for other terms.Play to authentic strengths. If your CEO likes to tweet, if an engineer is on Google+, or if a salesperson enjoys Facebook—encourage their ongoing activity.

The Po!nt: Go to the source. If you want your startup's website to rank well on Google, why not start with Google's own advice?

Answers to 43 Questions About Search, Social, Content, Conversions and More

Answers to 43 Questions About Search, Social, Content, Conversions and More | SM | Scoop.it

A great post about various subject as: SEO, Content Management, Conversions and a lot more. Very interesting. [note Martin Gysler]

I was clearly under-prepared for the amazing responses. In order to tackle such a magnitude of great questions, I'm giving myself some rules for replies.

If I don't have a good answer, I won't tackle the question. For example, Nathaniel Deal asked a good one on .NET viewstates impacting SEO, and while I'd love to reply, I don't know enough about them to provide solid suggestions. No answer can be longer than two paragraphs (plus maybe an explanatory image/graphic). Everyone who asked a great question gets their tweet embedded in this post (using Twitter's nice, new embed functionality), which also gives a spiffy followed link to their tweet. Where possible, I'll provide links to content for more detail so those who are particularly interested can follow up.

Let's get started!

I really like the new Twitter embed feature. Unfortunately, I must note that it does not work well for text-to-speech because It constantly repeats the original tweet. Tiny flaw. More importantly, there is some great wisdom in this articles.

Startups Can Jump The Class
If you are new to content marketing understanding how content marketing's four gears create a "virtual cycle" can help you jump the class. Content marketing's gears:

* Curation.
* Creation.
* Social.

* Ecommerce.

Clean Slate content marketers, thos so new to the game they have few preconceived ideas, can move to the head of the class by organizing their marketing differently and in alignment with ideas shared in Content Marketing's Gears.

We learn where to go WHEN we need certain kinds of information."

Simon Penson, founder of Zazzle Media, has a fascinating article on the future of SEO, that I have been wanting to highlight for some time. He argues and provides good supporting reference to the idea that Google is moving away from primarily leveraging links and anchor text to evaluate web site relevance to the use of semantic analysis of text co-occrunces to determine it.

He writes: "Imagine being able to outreach awesome content without having to look for links.

Simply make people aware of what you are doing and get them to talk about you.

It’s how it should be and it would have a profound effect on the type of content you might produce and brand-marketing activity you might pursue."

The article is rich in valuable references and tools for anyone interested in exploring this topic.

Game changing. Resourceful. 8/10

Justin Bruce's curator insight, February 25, 2013 8:05 PM

From an SEO perspective, google is updating all teh time and reliance on linkbuilding is dangerous as we have just seen with a key client.

Google still recommend a link building stratgy but suggest you diversify into PR and social media to build page rank. That means you need to create great content and promote it.

From a conversion perspective, great contnet is not enough, it must also be relevant. Look through your email subject matter from your customers over the past year and match this with search queries in analytics (not keywords but actual terms they used to find you) and there's your relevant topic and inspiration. Now you gotta do it daily.

Don't forget contributing to other publishers (especially popular and high authority sites) also constitues as content. Curation is fine if relevant (check out scoop.it) but creation is always best, it takes time so allocate time!

Pierre Marchildon's curator insight, February 27, 2013 5:28 PM

How To Do News Curation Without Having Problems with Duplicate Content

How To Do News Curation Without Having Problems with Duplicate Content | SM | Scoop.it

Robin Good: If you have been resisting the idea of curating news content on your web site because you are afraid of being penalized for having "duplicate" content, this article will shed some light on what is best to do to avoid it.

By working with titles, writing intros and commentaries to curated posts, linking out to relevant and credible sources, you have many variables at your disposal to make curation work for you, rather than against you.

Just follow the good advice contained in this good article by Josh Cunningham (author of the WP-Drudge for link and news aggregation) and you will be OK. It's the same approach I use to curate all my news channels. It does work.

Informative. Useful. 8/10

SEO for Facebook Pages [Video]

SEO for Facebook Pages [Video] | SM | Scoop.it

From the original article: "Facebook is probably not the first place you would think to go for SEO advice. However, the social media giant is looking to change that.

With the help of Distilled, an online marketing agency, Facebook launched a new video that provides users tips on how to optimize their Facebook pages.

The video is aimed more at business owners than seasoned SEOs, but it’s the first video Facebook has released providing users with this type of advice for optimizing their Facebook pages for search engines.

The video takes users step-by-step through a number of processes for building an optimized Facebook page with a good name and quality, relevant content. Then it shows you how to get links and likes for your new, awesome page.

The video does tend to focus more on why all of these things are important, rather than on advanced link-building tips. However, for a small business owner just learning about search marketing, it’s a good beginner’s resource".

Freshness Factor: 10 Illustrations on How Fresh Content Can Influence Rankings | SM | Scoop.it

In 2003, engineers at Google filed a patent that would rock the SEO world. Named Document Scoring Based on Document Content Update, the patent not only offered insight into the mind of the world’s largest search engine, but provided an accurate roadmap of the path Google would take for years to come.

In his series on the 10 most important search patents of all time, Bill Slawski shows how this patent spawned many child patents. These are often near-duplicate patents with slightly modified passages – the latest discovered as recently as October 2011. Many of the algorithmic changes we see today are simply improvements of these original ideas conceived years ago by Google engineers...
