In this video Linda Ellerbee and Dr. Cornel West sat down with children and explained the difficulties of slavery. This video begins by exploring how people were chosen for slavery starting with Europeans, Indians, and Africans. The video explores the journey of traveling from the slave’s native land, their environmental work place and their escape to freedom. Throughout the video, students offer feedback and information about slavery. The students sympathized with the history and worked towards understanding the issues that were not taught during their typical history lessons.

If you are looking for an authentic piece of history…then you have come to the right place! When Franklin Roosevelt pledged a new deal to the people of America, he promised to get them more jobs and he did just that. One of the jobs created through the Works Progress Administration was a job that captured the narratives of actual slaves. On this site, you can hear the voices of the people that lived during a time that we mostly read about in our classrooms.

Are you ready to go on an adventure ? This site provides a map of the southern and northern states and takes the students on an adventure through time. Students can watch slide shows, listen to narratives about slavery, and see how difficult it was to escape slavery. The website is very interactive, students are given the opportunity to write letters, express how their feel,  and watch videos. This is a great tool for teachers and students. There are teacher guides throughout the text that will aid teachers on teaching these lessons.

The relationship between the North and the South was very difficult during the Civil War. Most of the Northern cities were filled with wealth and manufacturing while the heart of the south was set on farming. Several opinions have been formed about the cause of the American Civil War, but most agree that slavery played a major role in the start of the war. This article highlights the differences between the North and the South and examines the role of the political parties.
