Reasons and Research – Why Schools Need Collaborative Learning Spaces | ICT | eLeadership | Skolbiblioteket och lärande | Scoop.it

There are Many Reasons Why Flexible, Active Learning Classrooms Should be Widely Adopted We’ve converted a few classrooms to more collaborative spaces over the last few years at The College of Westchester, and faculty reaction has generally been quite positive. These initial room changes have revolved around modifying the layout of a few classrooms from the row-by-row footprint of the traditional lecture room to a more interactive, group-oriented layout of round tables.

The Best Interactive Web Tools for Educators

The Best Interactive Web Tools for Educators | Skolbiblioteket och lärande | Scoop.it

Slideshare - Get the credit and audience you deserve for your presentations!

Scoop.it - A stellar social bookmarking service that is being used by a ton of teachers right now.

PlanBoard - It’s an online lesson planner made for teachers. Create, share, and manage lesson plans with simple and easy to use lesson plan templates.

Evernote - It’s insanely popular in education and useful for teachers, students, parents, and just about anyone who wants to remember what they’ve done.

Dropbox - I use Dropbox every day. I had to up to the 100GB size and feel like I’ll never fill it up. Great for backing up everything, accessing files remotely (even from your smartphone and tablet) and sharing things. I’ve seen it used for handing in homework on a regular basis.

I know we always say (a) it's not the tools it's the pedagogy and (b) teacher education is best done in context, but you have to start somewhere and if you don't have tools or pedagogy, a few decent tools can be a place to start.  I use maybe eight or ten of these regularly for teaching and teacher training.

I was excited to see that I was familiar with some of the tools listed. Overall a great list of resources.

Not specific to language learners, but succinct coverage of essential issues in bite-sized chunks (digital identity, copyright and plagiarism, personal learning networks) which will be useful to teachers and learners alike.

Mac Attacks: OS X botnets

Despite efforts by Apple to lock down the Mac operating system, we continue to see malicious software being pushed via torrents and pirated software packages. The increasing popularity of Mac OS X devices is turning heads in the criminal world, making it more appealing to develop malware for this platform.

The closed-by-default ecosystem makes it harder for this malware to successfully take hold of the platform, but there remains a subsection of users who'll gladly disable Mac OS X security measures – especially people who use pirated software. This means that those looking to hijack OS X systems for a variety of reasons know that they simply need to bundle their malware with desirable software (probably in the form of a key generator) to enjoy widespread success.

Due to widespread beliefs about the security of the OS X platform, these systems are also unlikely to have an antimalware solution installed that will flag the infection so once the malware is installed, so it's likely to go unnoticed for a very long time.
