Graph Activity

Graph Activity | Skill Based Activities | Scoop.it

 CONTENT STATEMENT

9.3 Blueprint of Life
3. Chromosomal structure provides the key to inheritance
  - outline ways in which the environment may affect the expression of a gene in an individual

OUTCOMES
14.1 analyse information to:
a) identify trends, patterns and relationships as well as contradictions in data and information
b) justify inferences and conclusions
c) identify and explain how data supports or refutes an hypothesis, a prediction or a proposed solution to a problem

ACTIVITY

Students are to use data from their experiment that they have already conducted on the growth of plants in different levels of light exposure. Results were measured over a 25 day period. Students are to produce three graphs using results and online tools (http://www.chartle.net/). Teacher will provide students with a worksheet on the experiment that requires students to use their knowledge and understanding on data interpretation to answer questions on the topic. Questions include - why students thought those results were obtained and to calculate the rate of plant growth using the graph.

Database Activity

CONTENT STATEMENT
5.10a) distinguish between biotic and abiotic features of the local environment

OUTCOME

5.18 presenting information

b) select and use appropriate medium to present data and information to an audience

ACTIVITY

Students will use an online database to extract information on abiotic features of the environment such as rainfall and temperature of different areas in Australia. Students can use databases such as http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/data/ (Climate Data Online – Bureau of Meterology) to obtain information. Students will search for data on rainfall and temperature in three areas from the same year. The data can then be copied into a spreadsheet to produce graphs so the data can be compared.

Spreadsheet Activity

CONTENT STATEMENT
9.2 Maintaining a Balance
1. Most organisms are active in a limited temperature range

   - explain why the maintenance of a constant internal environment is important for optimal metabolic efficiency

OUTCOMES
11.2 plan first-hand investigations to:
a) demonstrate the use of the terms ‘dependent’ and ‘independent’ to describe variables involved in the investigation
c) design investigations that allow valid and reliable data and information to be collected

ACTIVITY

In groups, students are to design and perform a first-hand investigation on factors that affect enzyme activity. Students are to choose one factor (temperature, pH, substrate concentration) to do their experiment on. Students will collect their experimental results and use excel to calculate the average result. Students are then required to present these results in a labeled graph using the graph tool in excel.
