Waiting for a tidal wave in low power wireless wide area networks - M2M Now

Waiting for a tidal wave in low power wireless wide area networks - M2M Now | SIGFOX | Scoop.it
Waiting for a tidal wave in low power wireless wide area networks - M2M Now – Global machine to machine news and expert opinions on the M2M industry
SIGFOX's insight:

The obvious lack of well suited connectivity solutions for the Internet of Things and M2M is sparking innovation, which is of course what the market needs to realize the expected potential of the Internet of Things and M2M.

This article is very interesting, thanks Steve Rogerson for writing it. Although the article does a good job of introducing some of the interesting actors within this space, it does not mention all the key factors that will determine whether the different solutions will succeed or not. That is of course also a subject that requires a bit more writing than a single article.

Some of the key areas that differentiate SIGFOX from other actors are:

  • Focus on low throughput (one technology cannot be optimal for low as well as for high data rates)
  • One single logical network (global M2M and IoT marketplace instead of a fragmented space making volume more or less impossible)
  • A simple and scalable network technology and infrastructure (whereby operational costs are low resulting in cost effective subscriptions for customers)
  • Low modem costs (SIGFOX is compatible with existing communication modules whereby it can easily be integrated along side other connectivity options and thus avoid lock-in and drive costs down due to modem volume)
  • End-to-end connectivity (besides the cellular connectivity, SIGFOX provides an intelligent backhaul allowing an easy integration all the way to the customer IT systems through standards based Web Services API and web tools)
There's of course more information in our whitepaper
This space will indeed be interesting and there is room for lots of innovation. Get ready for the tidal wave!

Telecom Council of Silicon Valley nominates SIGFOX as one of the world's 5 most innovative startups

Telecom Council of Silicon Valley nominates SIGFOX as one of the world's 5 most innovative startups | SIGFOX | Scoop.it
Sigfox : The first cellular network operator dedicated to M2M and IoT
SIGFOX's insight:

The Telecom Council of Silicon Valley connects companies and individuals involved in the Communications Technology industry with one another for business development, collaboration, and education.

Every year, the council organizes the TC3, Telecom Council Carrier Connections. This 2-day executive summit highlights the relationship between the companies building communication networks, with the companies and new ideas that are fueling its growth.

This event is also the opportunity for the Telecom Council to highlight innovative telecom companies with the SPIFFY Awards. And this year, SIGFOX has been invited as a nominee in the category Edison Award for Most Innnovative Start-Up.

The Edison Award for Most Innovative Start-up:

Some ideas are so unusual they surprise you, but it’s a small minority of these that are also likely to succeed. With this award, the Telecom Council of Silicon Valley recognizes the startup that brings the most innovative ideas, but also the ability to successfully bring that idea to market.

SIGFOX is excited by the recognition shown by the members of the Telecom Council of Silicon Valley and their validation of the disruptive strategy by which we bring a game-changing connectivity solution to the world of the Internet of Things and M2M.

In a few years, more than 20 billion objects will be connected to the Internet, and the majority of these connected objects will only have a few small messages to exchange once on a while. The existing connectivity solutions were built for high bandwidth terminals and not for these low throughput objects, which results in a major limitation on the possible business cases for the Internet of Things. Steep pricing, very high energy consumption & complex implementation makes connectivity a real headache for the IoT ecosystem. SIGFOX solves this headache by providing an out-of-the-box subscription-based low-throughput connectivity solution at a radically lower price, with much lower energy consumption and with dead simple integration. The solution is based on a completely new and unique cellular network, which is being rolled out worldwide as one standard Internet of Things network enabling a worldwide marketplace for connected solutions. As a global disruptive actor we are very excited to be chosen as a member of the prestigious list of innovative startups.

Sigfox - A radical slant on M2M connectivity

Sigfox - A radical slant on M2M connectivity | SIGFOX | Scoop.it
SIGFOX's insight:

THOMAS NICHOLLS: I’d like to start with a reminder that M2M and IoT applications come in numerous sizes and shapes. Those that need relatively high data rates work well with existing connectivity technologies, but many others only need to exchange small messages every so often. In this case there are issues: they include tariffs, energy consumption, coverage and scalability. The intrinsic design of regular cellular networks means that they cannot provide a cost-effective solution for low volume, low data rate traffic and that is why Sigfox took a different approach.

Skipper Xavier Macaire puts SIGFOX to the test for boat tracking

Skipper Xavier Macaire puts SIGFOX to the test for boat tracking | SIGFOX | Scoop.it
SIGFOX's insight:

Xavier Macaire, one of the leading French skippers in the figaro class, has put SIGFOX to the test as a tracking solution during his course in the Generali Solo 2013 boat race, in which he finished 2nd after an amazingly well executed race (well done Xavier!).

Xavier used a SIGFOX compatible tracking device to transmit his position every 10 minutes during the course of the race and although Xavier was at times kilometers from the coast line, all messages were picked up by the already deployed terrestrial SIGFOX network.

SIGFOX has created a partnership with Xavier Macaire in order to showcase one of the endless possibilities offered by the SIGFOX network. The long range of the SIGFOX network provides new opportunities for applications that go well beyond the limits of the coast line.

We wish Xavier, and the rest of the skippers, the best of luck for the 2013 edition of the Generali Solo boat race.
