Stu J B Anderson - Entrepreneur Societies

Stu J B Anderson - Entrepreneur Societies | SI Influencers | Scoop.it

"Entrepreneur Societies are not just about starting a business. It’s about the mindset, the introduction to small firms and the realisation that there is life after the ‘milkround’. We don’t just need graduates to start small firms- we also need them to work in them, and understand what the owner of the business is going through. Societies offer this experience and some"

Social Impact Markets (SSIR) ...for real?

Social Impact Markets (SSIR) ...for real? | SI Influencers | Scoop.it

"Why a market for social innovations is needed now more than ever."  !!?

This article not only doesn't answer the above question, but it stands as the poster child for what is most wrong with our industry and the talking heads that populate it: we have entire conversations about "social impacts" without ever identifying any... why is that?

[Disclaimer: I know Andrew Wolk and like him--he's a genuinely nice and smart guy.  Perhaps I'm not.]

I thought the purpose of social impact investing was to get either more social impacts, or at least better ones, in the same amount of time or quicker than we do when we simply punt checks into organizations at cocktail parties?

As far as I can tell, nobody yet has ever shown an accounting of significant externalities driven by their giving or equity into social impact investing. There does continue to be a great many people ready to talk about how many organizations they have supported and grown in size to an operational robustness many can envy.  Who gives a sugar about that?

Again I'm the odd man out because to me organizational growth and scale is not the purpose of being a good social impact investor.  And never will be, unless the impact you're seeking is to support white collar migrant workers and liberal arts graduates like myself.  Ho hum.

Maybe I'm obtuse, but for me it's the intended results that come out of these social impact portfolio organizations that matters most, not the overhead or how many new investors gathered round and exchanged adjectives.

I'd really love to see a few articles about social impacts driven to scale by smart investors making the rounds--any hard facts and just a few examples to follow.

What Matters: Social Innovation: A matter of scale

What Matters: Social Innovation: A matter of scale | SI Influencers | Scoop.it

"While these trends point to a tremendous flourishing of social innovation, the work of the next generation of social innovators will be to identify the ideas that produce results and ensure that limited resources are used to spread the best solutions... Bringing the best interventions to the people who need them most at a scale proportional to the size of the global problems we face is the major challenge facing the social sector, and perhaps the world."

Frieze Magazine | Archive | Twenty Years Fore & Aft | SI Influencers | Scoop.it

"Nothing can be ‘innovative’ unless you are convinced that change makes a difference. Without the magic patter, the semantic context that sets expectations, a rabbit in a hat is not a wonder, it’s just a weird accident. A true network society cannot progress, because it reticulates; it’s all snakes and ladders, rockets and potholes, mash-ups and short circuits."
