Meme's and marketing

My 500 word answer to finding out if meme's are good enough for marketing.

Chris Zadorozny's insight:

Meme's are an important part of social media today. They are nearly everywhere online, and even finding their ways to better a company by using memes in marketing. Marketing today is changing, and you can’t use the same tactics that have always been used. Newspapers are not as common anymore, and the Internet is taking over. How can meme’s bring in more people to the company to sell that company, or the product that the company is selling? Well, meme’s, according to many of the articles, can be created by anyone, very easily, in a step-by-step fashion, on some websites. When using a meme, it’s important to make sure it won’t harm anyone or infringe upon rights, and you especially don’t want to offend anyone. By going step by step, you can create a serious meme, a comedic meme, or one that doesn’t even make sense, but can bring in customers to your company or website to sell your product. One product in particular that could really use meme’s as a way of marketing is the wine industry. An article in the scoop.it articles is all about how wine could use meme’s to market the product to people. Not only does it talk about meme’s and how to use them for your website, but it also talks about blogs too, using them to your advantage in this article. What’s great about one of the articles in the 12 is that one is a full example of how to use meme’s to help your company. One man, Chris Lidland, who is from the Bay Area in California, used meme’s to help sell products from his clothing company. He’s a younger guy, so he knew a lot about the Internet, and how to use it to his advantage. One of his quotes from the piece, “Don't you hate it when vertical cord friction heats your crotch to uncomfortable, even dangerous levels? Problem solved. Lindland's Cordarounds mesh evenly, lowering the crotch heat index by up to 22 percent.” Another great thing about some of the articles posted here is the variety of information. Not only do some of the articles tell you to use meme’s for marketing, some tell you the bad things about using meme’s for your company. A few give some pros and cons, listing some things that could go wrong. One huge example in one of the pieces is copyright infringement. Although individual people make the meme’s, the picture could be copyrighted, without the maker even knowing. Once it’s used for profit, it becomes copyright infringement and the company must pay the person or other company use took the picture if they make money off of it. Tips are very common among the articles here, especially on how to use meme’s to your advantage. Finally, the articles here really helped me solve the question of whether or not you can or should use meme’s to market your product or company. It seems that they are becoming more and more common in marketing, especially with society being more focused on digital marketing and social media.
