The Comox Valley Airport (YQQ) announced today that it served more than 74,000 passengers in the first quarter of 2012, an increase of 11 per cent or 7,371 passengers over the previous year.

DeSilva Shirley's insight:

DeSilva Shirley's insight:

For Shirley de Silva, former Airport Manager, a unique identity was critical. Shirley was a driving force behind the improvement project because she could not find a way to market the airport properly. “We didn’t have any materials that truly reflected us and the scope of our services. We’re a modern airport, we just weren’t being recognized” said Shirley.

An airport connects a community to the rest of the world and promotes economic well being within that community," said CEO Shirley de Silva. "The economic impact of a new air service is impressive and demonstrates what an important investment YQQ is for the Comox Valley as a whole. For example, establishing a once-daily service to the United States would result in more than $24 million in direct annual economic impact for this area.”

DeSilva Shirley's insight:

“Each time a plane lands at YQQ, it generates labour hours for individuals involved in handling passengers, their baggage and the aircraft," said de Silva. "Direct impacts can also be attributed to businesses within the terminal building. The establishment of new air service at YQQ would also bring in more tourists who will spend money on food, lodging and entertainment in the Comox Valley region.”

Kathryn's Report: Comox Valley Airport seeks to sweeten deal for airlines: Passenger numbers continue to soar upwards | DESILVA | Scoop.it

YQQ is offering several new measures to entice prospective carriers, included in a new incentive program recently unveiled by the airport. The incentives include $28,000 in marketing support for new and current airlines. A 50 per cent reduction in terminal and customs fees and a 25 per cent reduction in office and counter space fees is also being offered for the first year of operation. Any airline that opens a new commercial route at YQQ will also have the support of YQQ's marketing and public relations program.

DeSilva Shirley's insight:

YQQ CEO Shirley de Silva said she was "pleased" to hear WestJet's announcement, and added: "Should WestJet move ahead with this new strategy, then certainly we believe that YQQ could be a good candidate for consideration." Last year turned out to be a good one for Comox Valley Airport in terms of traffic growth, as the number of passengers travelling through YQQ grew by 12,370 over the previous year, a 4.2 per cent increase.

YQQ Surpasses Industry Trend for Growth in 2011

With an average increase of 1,031 passengers per month, de Silva says YQQ is in an excellent position for continued growth in 2012.  She attributes YQQ's robust passenger numbers to the airport's strategic marketing efforts and the establishment of Air Transat and Nolitours new direct route to Cancun, along with Flair Air's new charter to Fort Nelson.edit the title

DeSilva Shirley's insight:

"YQQ is experiencing a healthy rate of growth compared to other North American airports that saw passenger numbers increasing by less than one per cent in 2011," explained YQQ CEO Shirley de Silva. "This increase surpasses our own passenger growth goals and helps to support our message to airlines that the Comox Valley Airport is an excellent place in which to do business."
