Mothers-to-be should take folic acid AND vitamin B12 to prevent birth defects, leading expert warns | Spina bifida • Hydrocephalus • Information • Networking • Equality - SHINE | Scoop.it

Mothers-to-be should take vitamin B12 to prevent their children developing birth defects such as spina bifida, a charity has said.

New research suggests that taking the supplement alongside folic acid will further help prevent the series of birth defects that affect the development of the spine and central nervous system.

Women who are trying to conceive, or who are in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, are already advised to take 400 micrograms of folic acid each day.

Former Norwich City star (+ Shine Patron) Danny Mills pipped to Celebrity Masterchef title.... | Spina bifida • Hydrocephalus • Information • Networking • Equality - SHINE | Scoop.it

The ex-Canary was due to embark on a fundraising challenge today in memory of his unborn son, who he lost to spina bifida a decade ago.

The former Sprowston High School pupil had been due to take part in the first Archie Mills Memorial Challenge this weekend.

Mr Mills and his wife Lisa lost Archie four months into pregnancy. They were told the baby had severe spina bifida, which meant he would not survive.

He became patron for the charity Shine, which supports more than 10,000 babies, children and adults living with spina bifida and hydrocephalus, and was due to cycle over 200 miles from Leeds to London and then complete the Olympic-Plus distance of the Virgin Active London Triathlon.

But the 35-year-old has contracted gastroenteritis and doctors advised him not to take part in such an arduous challenge.

Spina bifida and Hydrocephalus Awareness Week

Spina bifida and Hydrocephalus Awareness Week | Spina bifida • Hydrocephalus • Information • Networking • Equality - SHINE | Scoop.it

The first Spina bifida and Hydrocephalus Awareness Week will take place across England, Wales and Northern Ireland this from 22nd – 28th October.

The week, which will encompass World Spina bifida and Hydrocephalus Day on 25th October, is the initiative of Shine, the charity dedicated to supporting everyone affected by spina bifida and hydrocephalus.

To mark the week, Shine is encouraging schools, community groups and businesses to take part in its Wear Yellow and Shineinitiative.

Wear Yellow and Shine is a simple way to raise awareness and funds during Spina bifida and Hydrocephalus Awareness Week. The idea is that pupils, members or employees commit to wearing something yellow for the day – it can be single item or a whole outfit – and everyone donates a pound to do so.
