CES 2013: Samsung flexible phone prototype unveiled

CES 2013: Samsung flexible phone prototype unveiled | Shine Social Media News | Scoop.it
Samsung unveiled its flexible phone prototype, running Windows Phone 8 and branded Youm, during a keynote at CES that also included former US President Bill Clinton.
Shine Darren Fower's insight:

The world’s biggest technology manufacturer said that Youm, the brand it has used for its flexible display technology since June, was a prototype that was not going to launch imminently. Samsung's continued emphasis on the technology will worry its rivals, however, and indicates that the Korean company is continuing both to work on new display technologies and to reduce its reliance on Google Android. It pointedly demonstrated the phone running Windows Phone 8.

Mobile traffic currently makes up 10% of global Internet traffic, as shown in the chart below, and next year more people will use mobile phones than PCs to get online, according to Gartner. Purchases made on mobile devices amounted to $6.7 billion in the U.S. last year, or about 8% of total online sales, and are expected to nearly double to $11.6 billion this year. By 2015, U.S. mobile sales are forecast to reach $31 billion.

Britain has gone from lagging behind its neighbours in the roll-out of 4G mobile broadband to speeding ahead........... | Shine Social Media News | Scoop.it

In a few short weeks, Britain has gone from lagging behind its neighbours in the roll-out of 4G mobile broadband to speeding ahead with ambitious new plans. Christopher Williams reports.

Another economic crisis was averted this week, the Government believes. It stepped in to the row between mobile operators over the introduction of 4G mobile broadband services and averted a legal battle that could have held back Britain's digital development for months or even years, and cost billions in lost development.

4G will be widespread in Britain by next summer

4G will be widespread in Britain by next summer | Shine Social Media News | Scoop.it

Britain is to get widespread access to 4G mobile phone services by the summer of next year, six months earlier than hoped, after crunch talks between telecoms companies and the Government.

Orange-owner EE is already scheduled to launch super-fast 4G services in 16 UK cities within the next few weeks but its rivals, Vodafone, O2 and Three, were not expecting to be able to launch 4G services until the end of 2013.

However, all four operators will now be able to launch 4G across Britain much faster than planned, after they agreed to set aside their differences.

The 4G services will allow customers with smartphones to access the internet up to ten times faster than with the 3G services which are currently in widespread usage.

11 Nonprofits Utilizing the New Twitter Profile Design

11 Nonprofits Utilizing the New Twitter Profile Design | Shine Social Media News | Scoop.it

The vast majority of nonprofits have yet to utilize the new Twitter profile design that was launched on September 18.  The good news is that upgrading to the new design is extremely easy – it can be done in just a few clicks by following these four simple steps.

That said, your biggest challenge will be finding a “Header” image that looks good on multiple devices especially if you are a small nonprofit without easy access to a graphic designer. In that case, go to Bing Images and search by color (to match your nonprofit’s avatar) and you’ll be presented with hundreds of potential header images that could look as good as the eleven chosen by the early adopter nonprofits listed here:

Do you THINK Libraries should be e-lending????????

Do you THINK Libraries should be e-lending???????? | Shine Social Media News | Scoop.it

E-books should be available free from every library as an alternative to printed books, the Government has said.

Instead of browsing the bookshelves, library users would be presented with a list of titles available for download.

One option under consideration would allow library members to access e-books remotely via home computer or tablet, raising the prospect of more library buildings closing as visitor numbers fall.

About 70 per cent of UK libraries currently provide some form of e-lending service, offering free downloads that disappear from e-readers after a set number of weeks.

"...exposure to light from self-luminous electronic displays can suppress melatonin by about 22%,”

Are you having more trouble sleeping since you got your iPad or Samsung Galaxy S II? That comes as no surprise to researchers at the Lighting Research Center at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, who’ve found that two or more hours of exposure to backlit devices suppresses melatonin.

This suppression, especially in teenagers, can lead to trouble sleeping at night, according to researchers led by Mariana Figueiro, director of the LRC’s Light and Health Program.

* The Likes, Photos and Maps thumbnails previously seen under the cover image will be gone.

£1m project to produce a simulation of the insect's sensory systems!

£1m project to produce a simulation of the insect's sensory systems! | Shine Social Media News | Scoop.it

Honey bee brains could soon be helping robots act more independently.

The way that bees smell and see is being studied in a £1m project to produce a simulation of the insect's sensory systems.

The simulated bee brain will then be used by a flying robot to help it make decisions about how to navigate safely.

Robots that emerge from the research project could help in search and rescue missions or work on farms mechanically pollinating crops.

The research, which involves scientists from the Universities of Sheffield and Sussex, aims to create models of the neural systems in a bee's brain that helps it make sense of what it sees and smells.

90% of nonprofit’s supporters + donors now accessing Internet on multiple devices each day!

90% of nonprofit’s supporters + donors now accessing Internet on multiple devices each day! | Shine Social Media News | Scoop.it

With 90% of your nonprofit’s supporters and donors now accessing the Internet on multiple devices every day, nonprofits really need to prioritize mobilizing their Web content. Ideally, your nonprofit’s CMS (content management system) has been updated to include responsive design, but the problematic reality is that most CMS services commonly used in the nonprofit sector are as behind on the Mobile Web as the nonprofits are themselves.

That said, the following excerpt from Chapter 9 of  Social Media for Social Good: A How-To Guide for Nonprofits will help your nonprofit get started with launching a mobile website or at the very least get the idea percolating and higher on your priority list for 2013.  To learn more about launching a mobile strategy for your nonprofit, please see the upcoming webinar How Nonprofits Can Successfully Utilize Mobile Technology and Mobile Fundraising.

"A third of people have never backed up their computer........"

"A third of people have never backed up their computer........" | Shine Social Media News | Scoop.it

Samsung Galaxy S3 owners had a brief scare earlier this week when researchers found a code that would immediately restore the handset to its factory settings. If the phone was used to a view a website with the code embedded, then it would be wiped and, in the process, the music, apps, photos and anything else the owner had stored on the device would vanish.

The code could be texted to the phone or delivered by email and the result would be the same. Fortunately, Samsung has now released a software update that will fix the problem so S3 owners can rest easy.

A friend of mine recently had to replace her smartphone when her two-year-old son dropped her handset into the toilet. It stopped working immediately.

Losing your phone shouldn't be more than an annoyance if you have copies of your data. "When did you last back it up?" I asked her. She said she didn't think she ever had. On the phone were photos and videos of her son that are now lost. The phone was easily replaced but its contents were not.

Office Technologies on Way Out: "Tape recorders, Fax machines, Standard working hrs, Desk phones + computers"

Office Technologies on Way Out: "Tape recorders, Fax machines, Standard working hrs, Desk phones + computers" | Shine Social Media News | Scoop.it

LinkedIn surveyed more than 7,000 global professionals about which tools and trends will disappear from offices in the next five years and which will become even more common. Nearly three quarters of those surveyed said they expected fax machines to disappear, making it the second most likely office technology to go extinct behind tape recorders.

Other once common office tools like the Rolodex, desk phones and even desktop computers ranked high on the list of items likely to become obsolete in the workplace. Meanwhile, more than half of professionals surveyed (55%) believe that tablets will become increasingly common in the office, the most of any technology on the list. Laptops also ranked high, with 34% of those surveyed predicting it would become more common.

The survey is just the latest example that workplaces are gradually abandoning analog technologies for digital. Those in the workforce will need to adapt to these changes or else risk having technological skills that are obsolete as well.

While it’s unlikely many workers will mourn the loss of the fax machine, some may be more nostalgic for other vanishing fixtures of office life like the Rolodex or business cards (which ranked 12th on the list.)

Here are the top 10 office tools and trends that professionals think will vanish in the next five years: http://mashable.com/2012/09/25/extinct-office-tech/ ;
