Switzerland's first drive-in "sex boxes", which opened in Zurich to tackle illegal prostitution, are being hailed a success by officials.

As statistics expose a growing number of students turning to sex work, an ambitious project based in Swansea, South Wales, aims to push student sex work out from its hazy obscurity and into public consciousness.

...The Student Sex Worker Project is an ambitious three year project funded by the Big Lottery, in collaboration with the Terrence Higgins Trust and NUS Wales, and is based at Swansea University. Its pioneering research is the first of its kind. While student sex work remains a contentious topic that often generates debates, we are still left with considerable blind spots in our understanding of students’ involvement in the marginalised world of sex work.

Local authorities and American Evangelicals are currently working on reduction of sex trafficking in Thailand. But, some sex industry workers say they haven't been trafficked, and are calling for a stop to the measures.

...But while Thai law enforcement authorities are trying to meet this quota by pulling sex workers out of brothels, there is little evidence to suggest that the sex workers they are rescuing are actually victims of trafficking.

A rape crisis line worker in the Newport, CA area has reported receiving calls from a man who claims he is raping and torturing sex workers. The information that follows is from an individual source, and is provided to the community as a safety precaution, not a claim of fact or an accusation against any particular individual. Age: Mid to late 30s

Good looking, well kept. Owns a sedan and two dogs, a pit and a shitzu. Claims to have body modification, including a genital piercing and penis enlargement.

WHAT HE SAYS WHILE ON THE PHONE:

He moved from the New Jersey/New York Area to Southern California about 3 months ago. Claims to have targeted sex workers on the East coast as well, taking them to places in the Hamptons and on the Jersey Shore before he moved to SoCal. He calls the Newport, CA rape crisis line once he has a sex worker trapped. He says he cuts their breasts and rapes them. He says he wants to stop. He calls for an audience while he hurts people, and the crisis line counselor reports to have heard muffled/gagged crying and screaming in the background of the calls.

The rape crisis center contacted both the Newport Police and the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, and they will not investigate based on the above information.

Screen new clients carefully, keep an eye out for a date who matches any of the above description, have the phone number of a trusted friend or local rape crisis line that is sensitive to sex workers always on your person.

When it comes to dealing with Scotland's sex trade, most people are on one or other side of a great divide. They either see prostitution as a fundamental wrong that should be eradicated, or as the world's oldest profession, unavoidable and eternal - and therefore needing to be made as safe as possible. I don't advocate either view. I believe in people's right to decide what they do with their own bodies, even if it's for money. I believe in helping women get out of prostitution if that's what they choose, but not driving them out.

When I was 16 I worked on a production of Pal Joey. It was not a good play, but I had a great time working on it and the songs were pretty catchy. One song in particular stuck with me because it was about the things a burlesquer thinks about while she’s working. I did not yet know that I was going to be a burlesquer, I didn’t even know what burlesque was, but I thought this was a pretty awesome song. In our production the singer mimed unzipping parts of her costume every time she sang the word Zip, which is a hell of a lot of times. One of the cast members said that, while they were rehearsing, she thought that the singer would actually be unzipping a hundred tiny zippers all over her costume. I thought that would have been a lot more fun to watch, though it would be absolute murder on the poor costumer who had to make it.

As sex workers, we're constantly having our campaigns dismissed on the grounds that everything we say must be a lie because we have a financial stake in sex work.  It drives me crazy that it's a one-sized argument, as though only sex workers profit from sex work.  Your average sex worker makes substantially less than an anti-sex worker academic or nonprofit, so who really has a "financial incentive" to say what they say?
