Litigation for Emancipation | Cult of Gracie | Sex Work | Scoop.it

Litigation for Emancipation is a GoFundMe project to raise enough funds to begin a federal court case proposed by Erotic Service Providers Legal, Education and Research Project (ESPLER). ESPLER’s legal battle aims to advance our sexual privacy rights by attacking the prostitution law of the state of California on the grounds that morality is not a basis for legislation.

Gracie Passette's insight:

In the video, you'll hear from First Amendment and constitutional rights attorney H. Louis Sirkin about the legal issues and history of prostituion involved in this case.

Madam Dora DuFran was one of the most prominent and successful madams in the Old West. Her story is legendary among historians that study the way madams, brothels, and prostitution worked. Madam DuFran was a true entrepreneur and feminist. She knew that to survive the time, she needed to be the best and have the best girls underneath her. She is a true success story of the time as she started off as a prostitute and ended up carrying her own business.

Feminism, Women and the Sex Industry

Feminism, Women and the Sex Industry | Sex Work | Scoop.it

We should defend the right of women do whatever they like with their bodies;  and as feminists we should work with women in prostitution to minimise that harm, but the choices that the men who buy them make harm not only the individual they abuse, but contribute to a society where women are commodities.  Working to eradicate prostitution is not done for the benefit of women in the industry, who are capable of making their own choices within a fucked up system, but for the benefit of all women of which they are a small part.

We reminded the Supreme Court of the danger of measures that – like the Anti-Prostitution Pledge – pressure citizens to pledge loyalty to government-prescribed views. The Court will hear argument in the case on April 22, and will render its judgment in the coming months. Let us hope that the Court comes down against the Pledge, reaffirming the freedom of belief.

I want to hire a sex worker to help my mentally ill brother | Sex Work | Scoop.it

So hire a sex worker for your brother, SIS, if you think it will help—even if it just eliminates an excuse that’s blocking his progress—and there’s no need to drive to Nevada. Siouxsie suggests you look for an “experienced” (read: somewhat older) escort with an online presence in your area. A sex worker who’s over 25 or 30 and maintains her own website—and has write-ups on escort review sites—is not just far less likely to be trafficked or exploited, she’s far more likely to be experienced and patient. She may even have worked with men like your brother before.

The Message on Aurora - Grrrl Army's Latest Mural Kicks Open a Conversation on Prostitution

...So is there room for "DO WHAT YOU WANNA DO"? If you meet a prostitute who says she's doing what she wants, who are you to be sad-faced and judgy? All three of the mural neighbors I interviewed, despite their differences, say they're for legalization and regulation, but... "regulation" can sound eerily like another form of control of (mostly women's) sinful, sinful bodies—taking power out of the hands of pimps (yay!) and putting it into the hands of politicians (yay?). Prostitution talk is all about "but..."

I respect the women who come to me: Male prostitute - Mumbai

I respect the women who come to me: Male prostitute - Mumbai | Sex Work | Scoop.it

A 27-year-old masseur-turned-male prostitute talks about his life journey, his women clients and why he thinks it's no crime to fulfil their sexual needs.

...

Rarely, when I confide in people about the work I do, some admit that they find it disgusting and morally and socially unacceptable for women to indulge in such acts. I do not agree with that at all.

If men can go around with prostitutes, why should anyone have a problem if women hire a man — who is an object of desire for them — and do similar things?

Laura Brown's comment, March 14, 2013 3:36 PM
I have heard of women hiring a male escort to make them feel desired and better about themselves in general. But, the actual sex with a male prostitute does seem gross to me. Fair or not, that is my first reaction. It isn't a nice reaction, especially when I do know women who are sex workers (past or present) and I don't feel the same way about them. But, a male sex worker seems really skanky to me, dirty. But, even at the worst point in my marriage I could not bring myself to sleep around. So, that is probably something to do with how I feel about the whole thing. I'm not saying I'm right or wrong. It's just what I feel.
Gracie Passette's comment, March 15, 2013 2:39 AM
It's pretty rare here in the US to find male escorts with a female clientele... I'm sure it has more to do with gender income disparity as much as anything else.
Laura Brown's comment, March 15, 2013 12:46 PM
Probably a lot of women are too busy and tired at the end of the day to really care about having sex. It would be the intimacy which they would really like and I don't think you can really get that with a prostitute or some guy you pick up somewhere.

Column: Sex work | The Aggie

Column: Sex work | The Aggie | Sex Work | Scoop.it

It is very difficult, if not impossible, for a prostitute to seek justice for these abuses because she or he is then at risk of exposure to the law, not to mention judgment by society.

Many sex workers, especially higher-end escorts, are not forced into prostitution because of debt or drug addictions. These men and women choose sex work as their profession (a quick Google search for “sex worker interview” demonstrates the wide range of interests and situations that lead people into this line of work). The criminalization of the services they offer is founded on the opinions of those who think their personal morality should apply to everyone in this country.

Unfortunately, others involved in prostitution are not so lucky. Many are victims of physical/emotional abuse or hard drug addictions, or are forced into prostitution against their will. This type of prostitution is not consensual, and I wholeheartedly agree that those responsible for such exploitation should be punished.

This country’s taxpayers spend $200 million every year for the arrest of sex workers. Couldn’t this money be better spent preventing and persecuting those guilty of such exploitation, like sexual coercion and the trafficking of immigrants and minors?

Campaign aims to educate Downtown Eastside sex workers about their rights | Sex Work | Scoop.it
A new campaign has been launched in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside to help educate sex workers about what their rights are when dealing with police.
Gracie Passette's insight:

The initiative will see small cards bearing information about the Vancouver Police Department’s new policy on sex-work enforcement distributed to women in the neighbourhood, Pivot Legal Society and Downtown Eastside Sex Workers United Against Violence announced today (February 27).

The cards explain that the police guidelines make the safety of sex workers a priority and that officers should not harass women doing sex work. The cards also encourage sex workers who want to complain about police conduct to contact a trusted Downtown Eastside group like Pivot.

The Burned and Bloodied Sex Workers of South Mumbai

The Burned and Bloodied Sex Workers of South Mumbai | Sex Work | Scoop.it

An estimated 100,000 sex workers currently earn a living working in the brothels of South Mumbai’s red-light districts. Most of them are not there voluntarily, but rather, have been sold into sex work, sometimes by a relative or trusted family friend. Some are born into it. Life within the red-light districts isn't easy. In fact, it's pretty much like living in a giant toilet bowl full of syringes and awful people. These women live on the fringes of a society defined by the unrelenting harshness of its edges. They are frowned upon and ignored.

I began my photo essay on a group of sex workers based in the red-light districts of Kamathipura, Falkland Road, and Worli. The prostitutes work with Social Activities Integration (SAI), a small NGO modeled on the Didi ("Sister") Project. These women take what they learn about HIV, STDs, and women's rights back to their communities and teach others about the importance of condoms and HIV testing, giving them a sense of purpose and self-respect—in addition to helping them reduce the risk of sexual disease.

After getting to know some of the women, I felt the need to make my project more personal, in order to tell their stories. Obviously, each of them was a sister, a mother, or a daughter, not just a sex worker. I looked to create images of intimacy, femininity, and tenderness that would contrast with the often brutal reality of their lives. I wanted the viewer to gain insight into the lives of these women. This set of photographs is a selection focusing on violence against these women, taken from my project ,The Sisters of Kamathipura.

Take the time to read the amazing article and view the photographs.

Brothels safer place to work, former prostitute tells students

Brothels safer place to work, former prostitute tells students | Sex Work | Scoop.it

Students, or ''sugar babies'', who do sex work should be working in brothels rather than relying on online prostitution organisations, a former Canberra sex worker says.

The Sunday Canberra Times reported hundreds of ACT university students are receiving gifts and having their tuition fees and rent paid by so-called ''sugar daddies'' whom they have found online.

About 200 students at the Australian National University, the University of Canberra, the Canberra Institute of Technology and the Australian Catholic University are members of a website that matches millionaires with young women, it was reported.

A former prostitute and the star of the erotic film franchise The Horny Housewife, Nikki Stern, says that Gen Y students who are engaging in what she calls ''sugar-coated prostitution'' would be better protected if they worked in brothels.

Why the Sex Positive Movement is Bad for Sex Workers’ Rights

Why the Sex Positive Movement is Bad for Sex Workers’ Rights | Sex Work | Scoop.it

During the sexual revolution of the 1960s and 1970s and the sex wars of the 1980s and 1990s, the struggle to define sex positivity with respect to sex work served a purpose. To say that not all people have a horrendous experience of the sex industry, and that many sex workers value sexuality and see themselves as complex sexual beings as well as sex educators was an important statement to make, and one that had not been spoken before. However, it is essential to put this statement in historical context. To continue making the statement that many sex workers have a good experience of the sex industry without also including those whose experiences are negative and making space for them to speak up reveals a deep doubt about the validity of the sex positive argument. If we believe in the positive power of sexuality, we must also examine what happens when people’s lives are infused with sex negativity, and we must listen and support people with this experience in sharing their personal truths.

Gracie Passette's insight:

An excellent article by Audacia Ray. A must read, espescially for privileged (aka white cis females).
