Trip Hawkins releases second chapter of his 'If' iPad game for teaching kids emotional life skills

Trip Hawkins releases second chapter of his 'If' iPad game for teaching kids emotional life skills | Serious Gaming | Scoop.it

by Dean Takahashi

"Hawkins — the charismatic founder of game publishers 3DO, Electronic Arts, and Digital Chocolate — has a new passion to teach children the social and emotional skills (SEL) that they don’t learn in school. He has a story-based app that gets lessons across that help kids deal with emotions and problems like bullies. But rather than launch it as a free-to-play game, Hawkins has gone a different route, releasing it instead as a subscription game....

"While the first chapter is free, subsequent chapters require a monthly subscription fee of $5 per month. Hawkins believes that parents will like this better than the somewhat risky free-to-play model, where children sometimes get into trouble by spending too much real money on virtual goods.

"Hawkins also said that each chapter will contain a few hours of gameplay as parents don’t want games to consume an inordinate amount of a child’s time. The dashboard app is a tool for parents to help monitor their children’s accomplishments and keep them motivated to do more.

"Hawkins said that the game is aimed at helping kids manage difficult emotions, persevere through challenges, make healthy decisions, and show empathy and compassion. As important as all of this is, most schools don’t teach it."

Our Schools Are Un-American. Video Games Can Fix That

Our Schools Are Un-American. Video Games Can Fix That | Serious Gaming | Scoop.it
“Game based learning” is a misleading term. After all, gaming always involves learning. You learn who the bad guys are, how to shoot, how to jump, how to run, where the secret portals are. Gaming is constant learning. Life is also constant learning. You’re learning when you scroll through your Facebook [...]

Alex Wade's curator insight, August 11, 2014 10:32 AM

Games-based learning is no longer a buzzword, but integral to the ways in which we interact with education and learn about the world: if it's good enough, for babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers (a baby learns more in the first year than in the next eighteen years combined) then it should be good enough for learners as they get older.

This thought-provoking piece from Jordan Shapiro argues that it is not the technologies that have changed us, but that we have changed the technologies as the world around us has altered in terms of the construction, presentation and content of knowledge.  This demonstrates the postmodernism of contemporary learning and in common with this, that much of it is about play and finding liminal spaces.

While convincing, it is still important to see that there is a reason for the building of '2300 years of knowledge'.  It's not easy to throw away all of that thought in a hurry and to say to be done with it.  Instead, like the best of learning, it is important to scaffold and build and therefore construct learning closer to Lego to navigate the mazes of the mind, rather than trying to confuse at the outset . . . after all play is easy to understand and difficult to master, just like life really . . .

How Your HR Team Is Setting You Up for Failure

How Your HR Team Is Setting You Up for Failure | Serious Gaming | Scoop.it

You want a team full of motivated employees and a rocking company culture. You're doing everything you can, but somehow it's just not working. Turnover is still high. Employees look good on paper, but seem to get demotivated no matter what you do. What could be going wrong?

Your human resources team could be the culprit. It's time to take a hard look at your company's interviewing practices.

Sometimes HR wants to "sell" a really great candidate on the position. So they start telling them all of the great things about being a part of the company or fulfilling the role they're trying to fill. There's nothing wrong with that on the surface. The problem arises when HR starts making promises on your behalf. Promises you can't keep, or won't keep, for whatever reason.

How to Create 100,000 Users Accounts in Moodle

How to Create 100,000 Users Accounts in Moodle | Serious Gaming | Scoop.it

Adding a new user is quite simple with Moodle LMS, but problems crop up when you have to add thousands or hundreds of users. We cannot keep on adding users one by one, it might take some months to upload thousands of users. Don’t worry; there is a simple and an easy way to upload thousands of users into the LMS. Let us see how to do that.

As LMS administrators, we can add a user but when it comes to adding a large number of users, we have an option in Moodle to upload bulk users.

First, we need to make a list of users to be uploaded into the LMS, and that sheet should be saved in the delimiter comma format i.e. csv format because Moodle accepts only .csv format files for uploading users.

Only the admin has the access to add or upload user/users. Login as admin, select Site administration->Users->accounts-> upload users.

Leadership Is About Enabling The Full Potential In Others

Leadership Is About Enabling The Full Potential In Others | Serious Gaming | Scoop.it
The 21st century leader must have the ability to make the most out of every situation. They are courageous and not afraid to challenge the status quo and push the boundaries to make things better. Because of these qualities and many others, the best leaders know how to get the most out of people; they enable the full potential in others.

An employee’s success, the lens they see through, the decisions they make and how they navigate their careers are all heavily influenced by the types of leaders they are able to observe and learn from. This is why you will find that many of today’s best leaders were mentored by great leaders themselves (see examples of successful technology leaders and their mentors). Success as a leader is a by-product of the leaders and mentors we associate with throughout our careers.

Why Disrupters Don't Always Topple Goliaths

Fear not, you endless modifiers of business models. You can probably acquire or license whichever future technology will most endanger your business. Here's the thing: A recent, exceptionally thorough study previewed on the Knowledge @Wharton site demonstrates that most disruptive upstarts do not topple industry incumbents. In fact, the professors involved with the research conclude upstarts are more likely to license their wares to incumbents or get acquired than they are to compete with and eventually topple established players.

How To Command A Room Like Stephen Colbert

How To Command A Room Like Stephen Colbert | Serious Gaming | Scoop.it

On the very first episode of The Colbert Report, Stephen Colbert satirized the concept of “gravitas,” saying, “If you have sufficient gravitas, what you say doesn’t have to mean anything at all.”

While Colbert was probably exaggerating to get a laugh, the essence of his claim is definitely on target: Gravitas is one of the most important qualities for leadership in all businesses today.

A 2012 study by communications analytics firm Quantified Communications gave empirical weight to that idea, showing that “a speaker’s tone, appearance, and demeanor” was a staggering nine times more salient than the actual content presented.

So clearly, gravitas is important.
