Understanding Serial Killers

Understanding Serial Killers | Serial Killers | Scoop.it
The criminal mind is fascinating to most of us (just think of Ted Bundy or Jeffrey Dahmer!) Is it mental illness that motivates serial killers? Or is there another reason a person becomes a recurrent murderer?

Today I was attacked by two members of this page. I was abused and they tried to character assassinate me.. I was called a narcissist continually thru out the attacks by the two members.. It was extremely abusive and they were allowed to get away with it.. apparently the safety and well being for the other members do not exist.. When you are a victim of narcissist abuse and you have some crazy psycho bitch attacking you and calling you a narc and trying to discredit you amongst others is traumatizing.. I feel sick to my stomach that they get away with abusing me.. Soon I will be removing everything from this site because I no longer recommend it because it is not safe for other members when you have sick trolls running amuck abusing people for their pure pleasure.. I did not expect to ban members for their abuse but I did expect that they would be held responsible for their abuse and spoken to or even temporarily suspend.. but nope they got away with it and so be it.. they will deal with Karma! The two members who attacked me are Theresa Eier and Patrica Scanlon who I think is the same person using two ids.. so beware..

Jennifer B's curator insight, March 8, 2014 1:30 PM

This page gives a little more insight into the possible causes, prevalence, and onset of HPD. It emphasizes that there is still a lot we don't know, but some patterns we see is that it's onset is typically in late adolescence or early 20's, comes from a need for attention and to have connections with others (however shallow).  I like that this page mentions a genetic component, so much of the public believe that personality disorders are just a choice of behavior.  While this may be true to some extent, it is probable that our genes are driving that behavior and mix that with life experiences and you might have behaviors that are actually out of our cognitive control (i.e. they may be driven subconsciously or we don't have the insight to realize we are doing them.)

Serial Killers, the Brain, and the Mind: Empathy Research in Current Society

Serial Killers, the Brain, and the Mind: Empathy Research in Current Society | Serial Killers | Scoop.it

A discussion of empathy and the implications of a lack of empathy as well as current research by University of Chicago professor Jean Decety.

But why examine the abnormal and the psychopathic to learn about empathy? Says Dr. Decety, “To study empathy, as in psychiatry and affective developmental neuroscience, one should also look at when the system is broken: When there is a dysfunction.”

By studying the brain scans, Dr. Decety hopes to see a change in the brain activity and changes in the connectivity between regions of the brain that are critical to emotion and moral decision-making. This would render finding the dysfunctional circuitry or region a simpler task, and once the dysfunction is found, it is not a far leap towards beginning to understand the mechanisms that underpin the experience of empathy in normal individuals.

Dr. Decety’s research has multiple purposes: while furthering the understanding of the brain’s mechanisms and functions is and has been a paramount goal, he also hopes to make progress in early-intervention strategies for psychopathy.
