Discovering Seoul through food, culture

Discovering Seoul through food, culture | Seoul City | Scoop.it

Another essential stop is Gwangjang Market, which bustles with street food vendors and little restaurant-shacks in the evening when its shops have closed. Locals go there for Korean pancakes made from mung beans called bindaeddeok and cheap street food. I opted for one of the ubiquitous dumpling soup places, where for about $5 you get a huge bowl of steaming soup with pork dumplings, freshly made before your eyes. In winter, the stall benches are even heated. On my second visit to the market, I had sashimi and rice wine. The sashimi was near-frozen, a common way of serving it there and different from the Japanese room-temperature tradition.

Tom Piper's Travel Vibes Guide - Seoul, Korea

Tom Piper's Travel Vibes Guide - Seoul, Korea | Seoul City | Scoop.it

Seoul has a massive vibe on shopping, there are street markets all over the place, the sort of markets that sell everything … not really my vibe but worth a peep cause its the Korean version of Paddy’s and you might find some cool stuff. The one I have been to a few times is behind a department that’s worth checking out called SHINSEGAE. Another massive shopping center / mall to check out is LOTTE, I’m pretty sure you can’t miss it if you going to Seoul, it has a theme park and a hotel in it. Actual haha.

Gangnam smile: why the Chinese are flocking to South Korea to buy a new face

Gangnam smile: why the Chinese are flocking to South Korea to buy a new face | Seoul City | Scoop.it
All around the southern Seoul district of Gangnam, Chinese women walk down the street with bandages over their faces and around their heads. Some, despite hoodies pulled up and parasols pulled down, are so badly bruised and swollen that they look as if they’ve just survived a car accident – if only barely. They’re riding the latest crest of the Korean Wave: plastic surgery.
