SEO and Google have been synonymous - while most SEO tactics and approaches are search engine agnostic, they often get tied to Google ranking. It's fairly obvious why this is the case - Google is the most popular search engine with 67.3 percent of market share according to comScore.

 

Google also addresses (and condemns) SEO efforts more frequently than toner engines. But SEO isn't just for Google, and really isn't just for search engines, either. Every social media network has some type of search functionality.

 

As social media usage has risen, so has the volume of searches on these networks (YouTube is the second largest search engine behind Google and Twitter receives 2.1 billion queries per day).

 

To understand what is popular, relevant, and credible, the search engines are turning to social media.

Social media can impact SEO simply by encouraging natural link building. Think about it? Google doesn't want you to manufacture back links to manipulate page rank. But it's OK for others to share your content, right? Using social media so that others can find and share your content is natural and should demonstrate what Google wants to see. Of course, people will abuse that, too. Which is why engagement is key; develop and nurture relationships so there's always a genuine connection.

Let’s say you are a dentist in Los Angeles practicing general dentistry, Invisalign teeth straightening, and dental implants. For those three services, the amount of keywords that searchers use to find you are many. Because of that, you have to carefully think through what’s good to use and what is not. Say a consumer has a cavity and he believes it may take a crown to cover the tooth. Knowing that, what would the consumer type in the search engines to find a dentist for this? Before you look at the list of possible keywords, first think of one or two keywords you would type in. Then compare to the list below and you’ll see how many possibilities there are....

A decade ago, off-site SEO has been all about links. But it’s expected for search to progress, given that there’s a continuous evolution in web usage – which also has an effect on web marketing best practices.

 

“Social signals” is another trust and popularity indicator that search engines can use by obtaining available data from known social media networks/websites.

 

User behaviors, in terms of web usage, have been more exposed in social platforms, which is why this ranking factor has been somehow more relevant in determining popular content, personalities and brands.

 

Although it’s not applicable to every industry, and not really a factor that Google will most likely focus on, it’s still a signal worth pursuing (diversified traffic sources is always good).
