Google Ranking Factors: A Discreetly Cleaner, More Social Web & An Ever Dominating Search Engine

Google Ranking Factors: A Discreetly Cleaner, More Social Web & An Ever Dominating Search Engine | SEO in BtoB | Scoop.it

Recently, Search Metrics released a white paper on their findings for Google’s SEO Ranking Factors in 2013. It displays the correlation between particular metrics such as ‘Facebook Likes’ and ‘Backlinks’ and the rank ability of a page within Google.

Also available in the 70 page document are comparisons with 2012’s data, where that data is available. Not to many marketers surprise, a lot has changed. According to Search Metrics, it’s time to get social! In this article I graze upon some of the most important areas as well as my thoughts on what Google is playing it – for better and worse.

The data from search metrics is based on research and is not 100% factual. Nor are my opinions factual, but rather opinions and statements based on what I believe to be happening.

Facebook Introduces A New Way To Find You: 'Graph Search' A New Search Engine From Social

Facebook Introduces A New Way To Find You: 'Graph Search' A New Search Engine From Social | SEO in BtoB | Scoop.it

Your friends have shared their life with Facebook. Now, Facebook is making sure you can actually find what they've shared.

The social network unveiled a new search tool, Graph Search, that Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg described as the "third pillar" of Facebook, alongside News Feed and Timeline.

Graph Search, which is initially launching in beta as a limited preview for U.S. audiences only, will allow users to uncover social connections between other members of the site and quickly identify which friends have been to certain places, "liked" specific topics or appeared in certain photos.

Social Is Seo And Content Is Social [Infografic]

Social Is Seo And Content Is Social [Infografic] | SEO in BtoB | Scoop.it

You probably have already heard that Social Media is the new SEO, too. The reason isn’t rocket science. Major search engines are focused on delivering the best possible search experience to their users.

Otherwise, they cease to become “major” search engines. That being the premise — sites offering more relevant content get more visibility in the SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages).

Expert tips for using Twitter, Google+ and Quora to improve SEO | Our Social Times

Expert tips for using Twitter, Google+ and Quora to improve SEO | Our Social Times | SEO in BtoB | Scoop.it

This is a guest post by Kelvin Newman, Strategy Director at SiteVisibility.

at the moment reputation is largely determined by the quality and ultimately quantity of back links but I believe Google are moving towards assessing whether a site should rank based on the authority of the author, how socially shared it is in addition to how well linked it is.

So if you want your website to rank you’ll need to think about how you can make progress in all three of these areas. Unless there’s a dramatic shake up in the relationship between the major social services and Google the best data they have access to is their own network, which I think justifies taking the platform seriously. But before we get to that stage social is already heavily influencing natural search results.

The Google +1 Button Has No “Direct Effect” On Rankings

The Google +1 Button Has No “Direct Effect” On Rankings | SEO in BtoB | Scoop.it

Google’s +1s do not have a direct effect on a site’s ranking in search results. Google’s Matt Cutts said as much in a “Power Searching With Google” hangout on Google+ (via Alex Graves)

Here’s more of what Cutts had to say in the hangout: “In the short term, we’re still going to have to study and see how good the signal is, so right now, there’s not really a direct effect where if you have a lot of +1s, you’ll rank higher.

But there are things like, we have an authorship proposal, where you can use nice standards to markup your webpage, and you’ll actually see a picture of the author right there, and it turns out that if you see a picture of the author, sometimes you’ll have higher click through, and people will say, ‘oh, that looks like a trusted resource.’

So there are ways that you can participate and sort of get ready for the longer term trend of getting to know not just that something was said, but who said it and how reputable they were.”

To facilitate Social Media SEO optimization…

Include social buttons on every page of your site, and in all blog posts, press releases, and outbound communication.
Focus on the channels your customers use. It’s better to do a thorough job in just one often-visited channel than poorly in three.
Keep in mind that Google has made it clear that social signals play a role in its algorithm; Google+ is going to have the biggest role in your ranking.

How Search & Social Engines Are Using Semantic Search

How Search & Social Engines Are Using Semantic Search | SEO in BtoB | Scoop.it

The term “Semantic Search” is certainly not new. However, it has taken on a new dimension and implications in both search and social engines today. In addition, it has had a strong impact on targeted semantic advertising.

This special series of forthcoming articles on semantic search will take a look at the history behind the development of semantic technology and why it has now become so commercially viable and topical. It will also take a look at how the technology enables “answer engines,” rather than simple search engines, to improve the user experience.

The SEO Puzzle: The Most Important Pieces [Infographic]

The SEO Puzzle: The Most Important Pieces [Infographic] | SEO in BtoB | Scoop.it

It doesn’t really matter how much you study it, it’s almost impossible to get the perfect SEO (Search Engine Optimization) score for any long period of time.

Each search engine has their own algorithm to rank websites, and as if that wasn’t complicated enough, they change that algorithm frequently in order to perfect it and make sure that the same sites don’t hog up the top positions simply because they’ve figured out the x-factor in the algorithm to dodge other more popular sites that have the traffic, content mass, and extensive Internet presence enough to be ranked at the top.

I would probably need an endless number of articles to cover all the different aspects of the perfect SEO, and if I tried to do that, I would probably not be able to pinpoint it anyway.

Facebook SEO: 12 Potential Ranking Factors for the Upcoming Facebook Search Engine | SEO in BtoB | Scoop.it

New Search Engine, New Ranking Factors.

Facebook Search ranking factors could indeed be much different than traditional SEO factors. And that can have a huge impact on how digital marketers work, especially how it relates to SEO, social media marketing, and paid search.

Until Facebook launches a serious search engine, SEOs will continue executing, analyzing, and refining their efforts based on a number of SEO ranking factors related to websites, webpages, links, on-page optimization, domain authority, etc.

Sure, Google and Bing continually update their algorithms, but we know that on-page optimization is important, building high-quality links is important, pumping out high-quality and unique content is important, etc.

So, what happens if a big player jumps in the game with a completely different set of ranking factors?

What if Facebook launches a killer search engine? What will it look like and how will it work? And more importantly for digital marketers, what will the ranking factors be?

How to Prepare for AuthorRank and Get the Jump on Google

How to Prepare for AuthorRank and Get the Jump on Google | SEO in BtoB | Scoop.it
Google considers over 200 ranking factors when determining where our sites rank in organic search, so it’s safe to say that they’ll be using plenty of signals to calculate AuthorRank. Here’s my shortlist of factors that Google is likely to use in their calculation:

The average PageRank of an author’s content.
The average number of +1s and Google+ shares the author’s content receives.
The number of Google+ circles an author is in.
Reciprocal connections to other high AuthorRank authors.
The number and authority of sites an author’s content has been published to.
The engagement level of an author’s native Google+ content (i.e., posts to Google+).
The level of on-site engagement for an author’s content (i.e., comments and author’s responses to comments)
Outside authority indicators (e.g., the presence of a Wikipedia page).
YouTube subscribers and/or engagement on authored videos (speculation: multiple-attribution author markup for YouTube videos coming soon).
Any number of importance/authority metrics on social networks that Google deems trustworthy enough (Twitter, Quora, LinkedIn, SlideShare, etc.).
Real world authority indicators like published works on Google Books or Google Scholar.
