Kitchen Design From The Magazines

I’m a serial home and garden magazine obsessee. I’m subscribed to everything and what you learn going from the page to real life is that just that as with models, nothing looks as good in real life. It’s all about capturing a moment of a bathroom or a kitchen in the perfect light, the perfect soft furnishing, polished and glistered and thoroughly unreal.

I’ve learnt to have that in mind with my own renovations and I think it prepares you to avoid disappointment. There has been one exception, a single time where I feel I may just have trumped the mags with something very real and lovely of my own. All Type Kitchen built us a kitchen straight out of a magazine with all of the functionality you need in a living space. We loved the kitchen design they brought to life in our home.

Seeing a 3D Model of My Buildings Before the Foundations Are Poured

Some of the buildings we build have very complicated systems installed in them to make them habitable. I remember a test of a sports stadium’s water system. People were brought in to flush all of the toilets at the same time to test whether the water and sewer system was adequate for game day. Now we pretty much can build computer models to know that before we install the first pipe. A real benefit is using a 3D modelling service to build a model of your structure. I know you can look at 3D designs on a computer screen, but seeing them actually in three dimensions is so much more revealing.

As an architect I tweak and adjust designs over and over again before a client sees them. Does that make me incompetent? Not at all. Let me explain. Buildings develop over time. There is the initial request for plans for a structure. Then someone on a board, committee or planning commission will think of something that needs added, subtracted or changed. Well, buildings have similarities to living organisms. If you add, remove or adjust one thing, it has a direct effect on so many other things. If I take out one bathroom or add one in, I have to adjust the water pipes, sewer pipes, electrical wires and HVAC systems. Plus I have to consider changes to traffic patterns in the building because of the change. That is just the obvious stuff!

A 3D modelling service allows me to have what I call toys made of a building. They remind me so much of my building blocks and metal strut toys I had as a kid. They are colorful, and the components can be removed and handled. I have given a couple models to our kids, and they have a great time playing with them. They are old enough that there are no small part worries. I like being able to see models of the buildings before we start digging and pouring concrete. It helps me and the builder anticipate problem areas that will need special attention.

I Wonder if I Can Afford This

I got to looking around for investment opportunities the other day and I was focusing on something which would not be dull and boring. I have a mutual fund of course and it is boring. I am starting to wind down the business life it seems. I am thinking that it is a good time to cash in my chips, because the business is not going to get a lot more valuable in my lifetime. I was checking out an estate agent called CBS in Tenerife and I really like the idea of buying some property down in a sunny paradise. Of course this would not be full retirement, but it would be going into business doing the sort of things that you would do while you are retired, for me that would be golf and fishing. They have a lot of that on that island. I am thinking about investing in some vacation properties down there and perhaps buying a boat for charter fishing too. I wonder if I can afford this though, at least to do it in a big way. Obviously I could pay a little and get a little piece of a golf course, but I am not sure that would sate my ego. I have always liked to be in charge of things, as far back as junior high school when I was captain of the chess team. That was a big deal to me and ever since then I have always wanted to be the one who called the shots. It is not a full time job that I am looking to get involved in though. I figure that I can easily hire a competent person to manage the operation and I can just be a good figurehead. I am not sure how much a boat would cost.

Job Options for Photography Enthusiasts

I have always been interested in photography. I have been thinking about what are the easiest ways to get started. For example if you are a real estate photographer you are not going to need a studio and you are not going to need a lot of the stuff that goes into the studio, all of which is very expensive. You will need a good 35mm camera, probably a nice Digital SLR would be okay. Then you would have to have a few accessories, but nothing much past what the amateur would have in his camera bag.Of all the job options for the field of photography that would seem to be the best way to get your foot in the door. The only requirements are a good camera and a car to get you to where you take the pictures. I have both of those things. The real question is who do you get to give you jobs, you would probably have to get out the phone book and start chatting up all of the real estate agents in it. Obviously you would probably need a web page with your work on it to impress them

My Dad had a dark room in the attic and he was quite good at it, although he did not have the fancy equipment that you need if you are going to be a professional. All of the stuff he had was second hand stuff and I am guessing that I can get a pretty good kit by looking around on eBay and other sites. The people who are really into this can not settle for a really good camera if something better can be obtained. If I was going to do a lot of types of photography I would need a really good set of gear.
