What You Need to Understand about Google Penguin Recovery

What You Need to Understand about Google Penguin Recovery | SEO | Scoop.it
Anyone who runs an SEO agency has experienced the following scenario. A client comes to you and explains they ranked number one for a keyword(s) before Penguin.
Monty Richards's insight:

This is a great post by Rae Hoffman that offers one of the better explainations I've seen on recovering from Penguin. Even if you remove/disavow garbage links - they are targeted because they were 'artificially' boosting your rank. So removing them lowers your ranking - but removes the Penguin penalty - so link building is again necessary (this time with cleaner & more diversified links) to climb back in the ranks.

Our recent Penguin Recovery case study with Ian Gerada shows a great way that he uses to get highly relevant links to rebuild a link profile with - check it out here:

Get Quality Backlinks That Don’t Suck With Knowem! | SEO | Scoop.it
Monty Richards's insight:

Nothing magical here in this article, but Knowem is a great resource for finding high PR sites where you can build your profile and a link back to your site. As the author suggests, the real benefits kick if you're active on the sites. You can't do this for all (otherwise you'd run out of time for everything else) so measure your traffic, experiment with each one a bit at a time and focus only on those that send quality visitors to your site.

How to spell check your website - Inspyder Connect | SEO | Scoop.it
How to spell check your website - Discover how to to do a website spell checking audit with software to make a good impression on customers.
Monty Richards's insight:

As the saying goes, you never get a second chance to make a first impression. If a potential customer visits your website and finds typo after typo - it will reflect poorly on you and your business.

But how to do review all the pages on your website, especially if you have dozens, hundreds or even thousands of pages?

Website spell checkers can help with this. This article shows how you can do this easily with our particular product called Insite.

If you've been putting this off, hidden typos may be costing you business and even Google has been rumored to factor in spelling to their SERPs.

Why You Should Opt Out of Facebook Advertising

Why You Should Opt Out of Facebook Advertising | SEO | Scoop.it
Facebook has admitted to showing fewer posts from your Page to your fans, and using that drop in reach to encourage more ad buys. I’m opting out of Facebook’s Advertising money pit, and you should too.
Monty Richards's insight:

I think the collective IQ at Facebook has been steadily dropping since their stock went public. Sure, they have a great platform for advertisers - but their organic traffic appeal seems to be plummeting.

This move to restrict access to your audience smacks of nothing more than a cash grab.

Ultimately, it paves the way for more commercialization and the typical FB user is going to deal with more advertising rather than useful and engaging content.

Their biggest claim to fame was their user base, but how long will users stay if the experience continues to get worse?

Newsflash - people don't mind paying more when you add value...but when you reduce the value and charge more that's a whole different story.

SEO in 2014: How to Prepare for Google's 2014 Algorithm Updates

SEO in 2014: How to Prepare for Google's 2014 Algorithm Updates | SEO | Scoop.it
Here are some suggestions for companies and SEO professionals that are thinking ahead to 2014 for their digital strategies, including a look at the future of content marketing, social media, Google+, mobile SEO, guest blogging, and more.
Monty Richards's insight:

One of the highlights of this article for me was:

"Smart marketers will benefit from keeping a close eye on their link profiles, and performing periodic audits to identify and remove inbound links built unnaturally. High quality content investments will remain critical."

You need to own your link profile if you want to rank in 2013 and beyond - and you can't own what you can't measure (to butcher a common business axiom!).

Backlink Monitor (http://www.inspyder.com/products/BacklinkMonitor/Default.aspx)does exactly that - monitors your backlink profile and gives you a visual snap shot of how Google "sees" your website.

If you don't have this type of perspective on your websites, then you're attempting to rank with a supreme handicap!

How to Recover Rankings After a Google Penguin Penalty

SEO All Over All Over Again, Again: Part II*

SEO All Over All Over Again, Again: Part II* | SEO | Scoop.it
Learn why good SEO is a never ending marketing process of analysis, assessment and action, not a one time project.
Monty Richards's insight:

This article had me at the point where it says that most people don't understand why SEO doesn't end.

To me, this is almost equal to someone going out and buying a car and then being surprised that they have to refill the gas everytime the tank runs dry.

There are purests who don't like bluring the lines between SEO, content marketing/inbound marketing and social media etc. but I'm okay with it.

The end result is about growth for the business. If you ain't growing, then you're dying. In their own ways, each of the disciplines (when done correctly and consistently) help a business to grow.

Many people dream of being able to earn a living by blogging from home. It can be done, but it takes time and a lot of work. Start with a plan, and some patience, and you can be a full-time blogger.
Monty Richards's insight:

While this article mentions that it is hard, it doesn't really spell out how hard it is a) gain an audience b) monetize it via blogging c) wait long enough without giving up to gain momentum d) not throw in the towel when you eventually hit a traffic down-turn of some kind or have you site hacked and lose a pile of data.

It also briefly mentioned having the right sitemap - Inspyder makes a pretty good one if I do say so myself:
